Picked up a first gen engine with approx 50,000kms/30,000miles. Looking to “rebuild” it and swap it with my current engine when it decides to go. Although the engine works I’ll be taking everything apart while I’m at it.

Am I missing anything?
  • inspection/clean
  • replace seals & bearings (journal bearings + wrist pins)
  • timing chain + guide inspection
  • valve stem bushings + valves
  • grind, lap & fit every valve to seat
  • hone cylinder walls + new ring sets
  • oil pump inspection + compressed air through oil passages
  • cam shafts + lifters inspection
  • valve return springs inspection
  • tightening patterns + torque specs respected

Is this overkill or necessary & am I missing anything?

TIA, Leo.

Have you priced a full gasket set? Fairly expensive and what do you gain if the motor is in good shape? As others have said if it isn't broke. The SV motor will stand considerable abuse and never have a problem. For the time and expense of rebuilding if it ever needed a used motor makes sense. If you're looking for more power through upgrades or lighter crank or rotational items than taking the motor apart is is logical..

one low cost benefit if you've already got the motor might be to keep an eye out for Gen 2 cams and do the cam swap. If you have a carb and exhaust gasket, you could grind the ports to match the gaskets, then when you install the motor, you grind the other side to match the gaskets.

Is a ,"Quart" 2 pints? I even tho' I'm an old school brit and brought up with imperial units we never use the the term ,"Quart".

My 99 on 36,000 uses between 100ml to 200 ml of oil and I change oil between 2,500/3,00 miles.
