87 and nothing more. premium won't do anything to "take care" of your baby.

to be honest it depends on how you are setup , if your running lean high octane may help if you're running rich low octane could help as well there really isn't a huge benefit with octane levels. I personally have an m4 exhaust and never got it tuned, so if i don't run on premium gas I tend to be way to lean, resulting in backfiring etc.

If you feel like paying for the expensive stuff, then go for it. But you don't need to. 87 or whatever the lowest is works just fine. Some people say that the lower grade stuff will give you better fuel mileage, however I'm not so sure about that one. Seems a little urban legendy.

The thing about octane ratings is that people BELIEVE it gives them more power and stuff if you buy the higher grades. When most of the time, the engine doesn't need it and it's simply the person imagining things. And you know how that works- once a person truly, truly believes in their heart that it works........no amount of facts can change their mind. Nevermind that engineers and scientists work really hard on that stuff- it makes their car/bike go faster, ******! Haha.

 

ive ran 87, 89, 92, and 93 on a stock motor and stock jetting.

Cant tell a difference in performance so I use 87.

 

I run jet fuel in mine. Had a problem with head bolts being blown off, so I safety wired them to the frame.

All better now.

 

There is'nt any more Kinetic energy in 93 octane that in 87. Sv engine is not high compression so there is no need for the lower flash point of high octane gas.

 

Higher octane fuel has a HIGHER flash point than lower octane fuel. This higher flash point is why it's needed in high-compression engines.

 

It seems to because you're duped.

It runs no better on premium. The "premium" just means it won't explode early (pre-ignition) at high pressure.

Your bike won't do that.

Didn't notice jack. Stock map, full yoshi trs.

 

Again, the mapping and the exhaust matter none.

It's the compression inside the engine that matter.

you got it backward jbswear. the low octane fuel can combust with the heat a pressure of high compression engine, this is what causes the knocking sound thus the need for high octane gas that does not combust until the spark plug ingites it.

 

That's what I said. Low octane fuel is suited for low compression engines; high octane for higher compression engines.

If higher octane fuel had a lower flash point, it would cause knocking.

 

I know how gas works.

I'm just being an example of why this train of thought doesn't work. I myself at the time didn't actually know what was recommended for the bike and always used the lowest grade out of habit from my GS.

I always run premium and add some octane booster to bring it up to 110 at least. Every time.

I'm not sure if other states are like mine, but our cheapest gas (89) has ethanol in it, and SOME gas stations have 87 without ethanol which is either the same price or a cent or two more, but if I find a station that has 87 without ethanol, I use that. Ethanol is bad for the gas mileage...kind of.

 

True. ethanol is bad for mileage and horsepower.

I've always ran 93 in my bike because and car engine that has a higher compression rating than 10.0 requires 93 or better IE BMW mercedes any supercharged turbo car what ever......
the sv has a WHAT ??? 11to 1 or what ever If you want 93 put it in if you like reg put it in .

octane rating= the higher the number the less likely it will com bust under the compression of the cylinder

btw I get 55 mpg on my bike I see no waste

 

buddy of mine told me that running a higher octane can prevent build up of nasty hp eaters! but then again he drives a carburated harly i think.

 

The people that designed the bike say to run 87 in it.....so why not do just that?

 

They also put crappy suspension, and a torpedo muffler on it...

ok better yet what is the compressin ratio on a stock first gen and second gen sv. if its like 9.5 to 1 then run 87 if its 10.0 to 1 run mid grade if its higher than 11.0 to 1 t then run premimum
