Replaced a blown front marker/signal bulb, and when for a very cold ride. Temps below 50F. Started assembling my Solitron brake light flasher. Bought a pair of Sedici massimo gloves and a freeze-out balaclava (which really helped with the cold.)

Put in an 06/07 zx14r rear shock today. My OEM shock has seen over 20k miles and the difference is unreal. Is it just me wanting to think this or does turn in response increase drastically with this thing? I'm not sure how that would happen since the shock length is the same as oem, but it feels like it wants to turn more.
I'm about 175lbs with gear so this is probably overly stiff, but I couldn't find a zx10r shock and this was at the right price. I'm now noticing just how soft my front forks off...like my rear shock, it probably has the same oil in it from day one so I'm either going to do a 20 weight oil or jump for some .85-.90 springs and emulators this winter.

Yes your turn in will be faster. The rear is not sagging at all at your weight so the fork rake stays steep. I just recently did the zx14 shock and emulators and oil. It is a night and day difference in riding. Before unused to ride my Sv. Now I can trust it more and I can practice aggressive riding.
I am 195 and I will swapping the spring.
It is a stiff. I found a wrecked broken shock off of a zx10 just for the spring.

Ok that makes a lot of sense. I wonder what the pros and cons would be to me swapping out the zx14 spring for a lighter sprung one, say from hyperco, rather than getting a zx10r rear shock. It would probably make it a bit more difficult to dial in...

A spring is a spring. I only got the broken zx10 to get the spring because if cost. It was 30 bucks. Buying a hyper a hyperco spring for the zx14 shock would up your total cost beyond what finding a zx10 shock in working order would be. So keep that in mind. It may be cheaper to find a zx10 shock then sell the zx14 rather than resprong the zx14 with new aftermarket partss

Put a new rear tire on and adjusted my chain. My chain is just starting to get tight spots. Not too bad for 22,000 miles on the chain. But, I've got the Scottoiler to thank for that. I'm hoping to get 30,000 miles out of it. We'll see.
Well, looks like I won't be getting 30,000 miles on the chain after all. I did a 1500 mile trip down to Deal's Gap this weekend. 30 miles from home this happened:

The damned chain only needed an adjustment once. It started getting that crunchy sound about 300 miles from home. I figured I could make it home no problem. I was wrong. I lost the chain going about 80mph in the passing lane beside an 18-wheeler. I was lucky that nothing binded up, no engine damage (I don't think anyhow. I still need to do a closer inspection), the chain didn't hit me, and I was able to get to the shoulder safely.

Oh, and thank goodness for good friends with trailers!

EDIT: Sooo... What did I do to my SV today? Rode it 700 miles, trailered it 30...

From what I've read, 180 lbs is right on the border of the zx10 vs the zx14, so at 175 lbs you should be able to make the zx14 work.
Recommended 2ND Generation SV650 and SV650S Shock Spring Rates.
120 - 160 lbs Rider - 475 lbs/inch - 8.50 kg/mm spring.
160 - 190 lbs Rider - 500 lbs/inch - 8.95 kg/mm spring.
190 - 225 lbs Rider - 525 lbs/inch - 9.40 kg/mm spring.
225 - 260 lbs Rider - 550 lbs/inch - 9.85 kg/mm spring.
To covert to kg/mm multiply lbs/inch * 0.0179 IE. 500 lbs/inch * 0.0179 = 8.95 kg/mm
To covert to lbs/inch divide kg/mm / 0.0179 IE. 8.95 kg/mm / 0.0179 = 500 lbs/inch

Zx14 spring is 543lbs

Shimming the right Nissin caliper a hair, effectively offset the top screw to the bottom one by 0.05mm. The slight brake drag gone, slight pulsation gone, brake lever engaging much sooner now. Oh yeah, I'm using the dreaded GSXR radial MC :).

Mine were dragging too. Making sure I pumped up the brakes and held the lever tight when tightening caliper bolts and the axle bolt centered everything up nicely and drag was gone.

Threw some stabil in the tank. Finished bricking the floor of its' little home.

Glad you didn't get hurt, and were close to home.

Yesterday, my exhaust hanger bracket broke after a series of deep pot holes and my reattached stock exhaust pipe let loose and did a death tumble at 50 mph. It was destroyed and I had to ride the rest of the way to work and back home again with no silencer and an open mid pipe.

Ordered a new M4 which should be here tomorrow.

Ya you're right...What is the going rate on these zx10 shocks? Can they be found for less than $100...I bought my zx14 shock for $50.

Good choice... M4 are loud enough but not obnoxious and not only look good, they are well built.... I don't regret getting my full M4 system with the titanium can (titanium mid seems to not really be worth the extra cost)

Although... if a pothole kicked loose the hanger... you may want to go around the bike with a spanner and check any other bolts for potential looseness
