Hey Everyone,
Just joined the forums. I just got a 2006 SV1000s that my friend wrecked this summer and I'm trying to fix it up to sell. The gas tank got crushed so I'm looking at putting on a used one from ebay. My question is, will a SV650 gas tank drop in on this bike or do I need to get one specific to the 1000s? Does the date range matter?

as far as i can tell any tank 2003+ will work. they are the same.
99-2002 are not even close. and will not work without some major work.

the way to check is to use a microfiche site (ronayers.com for example) look up the tank part number for both bikes.
for example
http://www.ronayers.com/FUEL-TANK-MODEL-K4-C153822.aspx 2004 sv1ks tank is 44100-16G30 (the last 3 are the color code)
http://www.ronayers.com/FUEL-TANK-MODEL-K4--C235502.aspx 2004 sv650 tank is 44100-16G30 as well
therefore, same exact part.
hunt around the classifieds here if you can wait. tanks come up and prices are much better on svr than on ebay.

edit: 4 minutes to an answer. that may be my personal best :)

the tanks are the same for every year sv after and including 2003. if it looks like the same tank, it is.

for 2nd gens, year only matters for *some* parts on 2003 models and 2007+ 650s have a bit different engine with two plugs per cylinder. then there are minor differences between s and n but once again, not with tanks.

I have an 03 1000 tank on my 08 650. Pump swapped right over and it fit fine minus one thing. The 03 tank had a wider flat section where the rear hinge bolted up and wouldn't lift all the way up because it would contact the subframe. I just trimmed a bit off as there was 3/4" of extra material there on each side and it has served me well for the past 1.5 years.

My experience is that the 03 SV650, 03 SV650S and 03 SV1000S tanks are unique. An 04 tank can go on one of the listed bikes w/o issue but an earlier tank on a late bike will bolt in but there is clearance problems at either the subframe or the seat. I just remember at one point at the race track swapping tanks from one bike to another due to a crash and I thought we had to dent in a couple of areas to get it to work correctly.

650 and 1000 tanks are all interchangeable except as listed above. I have used 650 tanks on 1000 and the other way around many times.
