rear wheel/axle question

Hey guys, great forum you have here. I don't own an SV, but my brother and a friend do. They aren't near me, and they don't take their own bikes apart so I can't ask them about this.

I own a '06 Triumph Bonneville, and I'm adapting SV650 wheels and forks to it. The front end is fitting fine thanks to some help from a machinist, but I have a question about the rear wheel.

The axle appears to be a few mm smaller in diameter than the bearings in the wheel. The rear spacers fit the axle fine, but when I stick the axle in the wheel it is very loose, almost like the bearings or the axle is the wrong size. Am I missing something here? Is there a spacer that goes around the axle? Is it possible someone installed different bearings in the rear wheel? I bought the wheel used off Ebay, but it came with the axle and all the spacers and from what I can tell looking at all the parts they are correct.

Thanks guys!

btw, here's a pic of my frankenbonnie:

i know that the front wheel from 1. and 2. gen look alike but have different bearings in them, might be also the case with the rear, saying if you have a wheel from the 1. gen and a axle from the 2. gen there might be some play or the other way around, otherwise there should be no play, there is a spacer inside and outside of the cush drive they could be also be the cause of some play if one is missing

hope that helps

the spacers fit the axle exactly right, there is no play there. But if I put the axle in the wheel with no spacers it fits loose, like the bearing size is a couple MM bigger than the axle size. As it is now, it seems like the spacers would carry the load, not the bearings.

I got the wheel and axle together from the same guy, but I guess anything is possible in the land of Ebay.

Does this sound like something is off, or something is wrong with the bearing size?

ok I figured it out, I have a 2003 rear wheel and a 2002 axle. What I need is a 2002 rear wheel since the 2002 has the same axle size as my bonnie, but it looks like the bearings for the 2003 are the same OD and length as the 2002 but the smaller diameter like I need:

2003 bearings: 20x47x14
2002 bearings: 17x47x14

also the spacer in between the bearings is smaller on the 2002 rear wheel (17mm vs 20mm) and I can only assume that the 2003 rear axle is 20mm vs the 17mm of the 2002.

Long story short, I'm going to swap the bearings for the smaller 2002 bearings. Mystery solved.
