Quieting down a SV1000S RS-3 Exhaust

So i've had my SV for a few years now. It came with Yoshi RS-3 pipes, and im finally sick and tired of the noise they make. I wear ear plugs if im riding for more than 30 minutes, but for my 5 minute commute to work and back I go without.

As far as I can tell there are no baffles in these pipes, and im not sure if they originally came with baffles, or if there are any I can purchase to stick in them. I really like my bike, so I dont want to sell it, but i've been considering it. I just cant deal with the noise anymore, it seems louder with my helmet on rather than off. Any idea's or help will be appreciated, if you know of a quieter exhaust i can get for it, i'll consider that option. Or if you know a online dealer that sells baffles for the RS-3 i'll love you long long time.

Thanks for the help. I love this forum even if I do mostly lurk. :naughty:

Yoshi has a baffle that should take it down close to 10dbl's. I wanted to get one for mine but it was going to be quite costly having to get it in or shipped to Canada. Also mine is the older style without the screw holes for the baffle to mount to. I have been thinking of putting the stock system back on.

Your confusing baffles with restrictor insert or decible killer. Unless the PO gutted the cans and removed the internal baffle, you're talking about the restrictor insert which Yosh sells, the restrictor comes with the can new, unless it's an older model as stated previously. My Triumph came with a race can that was too old to mount a restrictor unless I modified one, so I sold the can and bought a different slipon.

Don't know too much about different pipes, but I'm still running the stock cans on my 1000. I removed the air snorkel and had tank risers on it, but it was too noisy. I loved the sound it made, but it got annoying. (guess I'm getting old) :) I do like the quiet thump with the stock pipes. I like to think of my baby as a silent assassin.

Well I guess I need to stop squiding it up and start wearing earplugs again. I just hate putting them in for a 5 minute ride to work, and when i ride another minute to subway for lunch. I take more time gearing up than I spend riding it seems haha.

I was thinking of getting some Yoshi's or doing the can mod. I don't know yet. Wife says it is loud enough.

Sunship, you still have the drilled stock cans? I have inner nerve damage and lost most of my 4k and up. I'll just take my hearing aids out. :p

Archer, if you think of selling them, let me know.

I leave before dawn everyday and try to make as much noise as I can up the street...haha! After being sued for a million+, and them being boat jumpers, f'em all, except one, I just like her for her looks.:naughty:

You missed my point completely, I wasn't dissing you about the insert. My answer wasn't sarcastic, I was commenting on how brief a ride to work you have. I didn't think asking which end of the can was stupid. My woodworking shop was 5 miles from home and I never commuted on the bike. Too short of a trip. Great way to build up carbon deposits. I rode my bicycle to work or my pu when needed. Sheesh, get a grip on reading.

Edit: You could still buy the inserts and drill your own hole through the bottom of the outlet tube and screw into the new inserts unless Yosh changed the dia of the outlet which I doubt. Most aftermarket slipons and full systems were track only originally when they hit the market and because of noise legislation they now are including restrictor inserts to continue to sell their product to the non racing public. It was a cheap fix to stay in the street game.

oh my fault man. I apologize then. Im used to other forums where the flaming flys around faster than a hayabusa on nitrous with a squid riding. Sorry for jumping the gun.

I'm either going to buy new Yoshi's or live with what I have. Thanks all for being helpful, sorry again Rman.

This forum along with GS-Twin are the best ones out there.

I knew what RMAN was getting at. I'd get a trail bike if my commute wasn't 50 miles one way. I could only wish it was as close as yours. DOH!

I had the same issue. My 1k came with RS-3's installed. The noise was not an issue for me so much as it was for neighbors. I live in a small condo complex which is normally very quiet. Out of respect for others I devised this solution. I installed adjustable butterfly valves in the pipes using $6 worth of Stainless Steel hardware. This was a year ago and to date 2 people have noticed the non-stock mushroom head bolts and asked what they were. If the pictures need any explanation just ask. When butterflies are closed the bike is still not "quiet" but it makes a huge difference in the decibel level. I can ride out of the neighborhood at a reasonable noise level then with the turn of a hex wrench be emitting full RS-3 thunder.

Newtune, that is a pretty genius way to do it. I think i'm going to hold off until the neighbors complain. I've had the bike 3 years now and no one has complained. But the house next to me had been empty for awhile. New Neighbors moving in has me reconsidering my pipes.
