Fuel System Cleaners??? In a race scenario?

Question: Would a fuel system cleaner hurt performance by changing the dynamics of the fuel?

I know in the long run, it would improve performance by cleaning the injectors and valves, but since I only race this bike, I'm worried that any performance loss while using a cleaner will hurt my race results.

Additional info and questions: I have an 07 650 that's been a race bike the majority of it's life. I've only owned it this year. I've been thinking about some basic maintenance to keep it running as close to tip top as I can since I need every advantage on the track I can get over the competition. Any other advice on small things to clean or maintain would be appreciated. This bike is supersport legal so I can't do many modifications, but if they are SS legal mods, please share.

Since the Techron in the bottle is basically what is added to bulk Chevron gas at the pump, I wouldn't think that a change of fuel chemistry or octane rating would occur. Cleaners for older carbed engines sometimes would cause rough idling because deposits would disperse and not fully dissolve and clog jets and other small openings. I'm not a racer or track rider, but I've never read or heard about these cleaners affecting performance in a negative fashion. Ask the fuel guys at the track what they think.

Yeah, Techron is only in gas from Techron and Texaco stations. Not sure what detergents BP has in their fuel, but that's what's in my bike now because the BP station is right next to the track here.

Today I've been trying to google differences between Techron and SeaFoam as I find time. I'm racing this weekend so it'd be nice to find some answers whether I wind up treating my gas or not.

Techron doesn't contain alcohol like Seafoam does.

I have used both, and in general feel that Techron is the better cleaner.

Running 1 oz per gal shouldn't be noticeable either on the street or track. If you want to check, just add 1 oz to a gallon of race gas and run it in practice.

Hard part about that is my butt dyno won't be able to tell small differences like that. And with the long sweeping turns 1 and 2 at our track it is vital to get every bit of 'UMPH' possible to make passes or stay ahead of the pass.

I think I'll skip on it if I can't get any proof of performance results. I'll likely be doing a valve adjustment this winter and I'll take a look at how dirty they really are when the TB's are off.

If you are worried about it hurting performance in a race, use it during practice and trackdays. I never fill up my gas tank all the way. On my 1st gen, I put in just enough to see it at the bottom. That always got me by 25minute GTL races.

You could also pull the heads every year and clean the valves if you are really worried about it. On a difficulty scale of 1-10, I'd say its a 4 (pretty easy, only a valve spring compressor as a specialty tool).

I use the same fuel level you described in my races too.

I rarely practice more than a single session and don't use this bike for track days, that's mainly why I'm posting. The only chance I'll really have to use a cleaning product would be during a race. Maybe I could just put in a light dosage for a few tanks worth of racing and hope it does something good.

Ahhhh, shut it! lol

I didn't use any cleaner, but I still smashed my personal best time. But you just smashed yours more. At least I can say that I still beat you multiple times my rookie year :) Watch out, I'm looking to drop even more time in Sept!
