draining carbs for winter

Ok, first let me say I searched and searched, and didn't find what I needed.

I live in MN, and I want to drain the fuel from the carbs so they don't turn to sludge over the winter. I have an 01 sv650s

First: I can't seem to find a fuel valve. Is there one? If not, how do I keep the fuel from running out of the tank through the carbs when I drain them.

Second: What is the easiest way to get at the carb drain plugs? They look pretty burried.

Third: If it's nearly impossible to drain the carbs, I would like to shut off fuel and run the bike till she's dry. See question 1.

Sorry if they are noob questions, or if they have been covered over and over.

There is no ON-OFF-RES switch on our bikes (at least the 99-02). The fuel flows from the vaccuum pull, not a switch. If you can't drain the carbs, maybe you could pull off the fuel line from the tank and run it til that supply dires up. Next option would be to drain the tank as much as you can and then run til dry. Better option may be to use the winter break to just go ahead and pull the carbs, drain them, then use the time to clean them so they are minty for the next riding season.
The bike runs fine now, and I'm affraid if I remove them to clean them, I'll probably screw them up.

Besides, I'm already doing that on my monster, and I don't want to try and do two sets.

If I pull the fuel line from the tank, won't it just drain the tank? I guess I could clamp it off, but I'm affraid that could damage the fuel line. I can do that if I have to, but I would rather not. I also have a bandit, and the drain valves on that were easy to get at, but I had to drain the tank to keep it from draining through the carbs.

You could remove the airbox, loosen the carbs and pull off from the intake boots with the throttle cables still attached and everything else, rotate 90deg and get to the float bowl drain screws. You can use a thick old towel to drain the gas into. Or, just fill the tank completely, add Sta-bil, run the engine for 15min or ride around the block a couple of times and that's it. That's what I did for nine years with my '01 and never had a carb problem. You can also take Snlsmith's advise and pull the carbs for a cleaning for next season. And, as was stated, the petcock is vacuum operated so no gas will flow from the tank with the motor off. You could disconnect the full tank from the bike and remove without any gas leaking out hoses.
I'll look into doing the partial pull, turn, drain.

Thanks
