Clip on for a sv650

I have a 2005 SV650 not the s verson so it doesnt have clipons. I am about to get into track days and was wondering I could just buy some clip ons and take off the stock bars and put clip ons for the track and when I'm not on the track throw the normal bars on there. Or am I going to have to do a gsxr front end swap to get clip ons?

Clip-ons are 100% not necessary for track days. Plenty of track riders ride their bikes as is.

If you really want clipons go right ahead but it would be a pain in the butt going back and forth each time. Easiest brand to buy if you really want to do that would be Woodcraft with their two piece clamp design as it doesn't require dropping the fork legs down to get the clamps off.

I have an SV650N and I rode until advanced group with the stock handlebars, it was awesome passing 1000cc I-4's with a naked bike with handelbars lol

I have since converted to woodcraft clip ons, the control lines and brake lines are a little long but it gets the job done.

I would just pick one or the other, clip ons or bars. But like Oreo said clip ons are not necessary at all.

Swapping would take a little time but is doable. Like Oreo said get the Woodcrafts, and leave the clamps for the stock bars right where they are. But once you get used to clip-ons for the track it's not a big deal to keep them on for the street unless you're doing a lot of longer rides and want to sit up more.
I raced with stockish handelbars (Suburban Machinery SM1) for a full season, BTW.

IMO, the real advantage of clip ons is not whether or not you get faster with them or slow (some may think that is true) or if you are passing people. The REAL advantage for me is that it puts me in a very natural position on the track. Makes it easier to hang off and most importantly, if I low side, I can just get a spare bar and fix my bike and go back out there. With handlebars, you have to carry a spare.

If you have to swap then yes, I agree. It's a painful thing. If you keep the clip ons permanently, it will make your life easier.

You will have to get shorter S lines (if you were planning on getting SS lines, this is a good time), you need to shorten the headlight brackets and you need a set of clip ons. After that you just need to drill a couple of holes and you are done.

There was an instructor with a KTM on my last track day. He was running handlebars and he's fast as hell. He was running on the advanced group. So yes, some people feel fine with them. I ran my Duc's with handle bars and I didn't like it.

My advice is stick with the bars for now if you have a reason to keep the upright riding position (commuting/touring/etc). You can do a few trackdays until they begin to limit your body position (if they ever do), then change over. Or, if you only ride the bike aggressively, just switch over to clipons and don't look back (p.s. I did the latter).
