Hi everyone,

A couple of months ago, I installed the Avon Distanzia on the front (120/70R17) and last week I installed a Shinko 705 on the rear (150/70R17). Links to the pics:

Rear Shinko 705:

Both tires:

I already liked the ride of the Avon very much and today was my first day out on the Shinko out in the plains east of Denver on dry roads. At highway speeds, I do not feel any difference from street tires. When I drop down below 30 mph, I notice some slight nobby feel from the rear but I kinda like it. There is too much snow, ice and gravel up in the mountains so I will have to wait to see how the Shinko does on the twisties but I think it will do fine. My purpose in going dual purpose is to open up much more riding in Colorado with gravel and dirt roads. I realize my bike is not a trail bike but I think it will do fine on most roads.

I wish Shinko had the 705 for the front but no available size. The folks at Chaparral have the Shinko 705 for a very good price and were great to work with. The Shinko is so much cheaper than the Avon and appears to be solid. Will let you know how they work out.

Can't wait for warmer weather !!

I have been running the 705's on my F650 since late July early August I think. I got two rears and one front for $153 shipped from Chaparral for my bike. I really like them. My bike is pretty much only used for on-road riding and they are wearing well and handle great.

I know a guy that got 8k miles out of a rear on his 1200GS.

Tread wasn't fully worn, but some of the lugs started tearing off the carcass.

Another buddy has those on his WeeStrom and with 8k miles they've got at least half their life left.

I ran a set of Distanzias one time, I wasn't impressed with their gravel road abilities, they were a great pavement tire.

the Shinko is cheap, did you go up a tooth or 2 on the rear sprocket to compensate for the taller 150/70 rear ?

fwiw, I found Pirelli MTR60-Corsas to be the best dual sport tire for the SV

next best tire I found are Avon Extreme Rains

The person I bought the bike from had already changed the front sprocket but I am not sure what size. I have the original sprocket and I think also his paperwork so I can research. Very good question that I appreciate your bringing to my attention.

Something that I also noticed is that the bike is a little bit taller but at 5'10", I can still get my feet flat on the ground.

I will check out the MTR-60s when I have to replace the Distanzia as Shinko does not make a front to fit the SV.

thanks,

tom
