Driver calls for tow but not 911 after fatal crash in Anacortes

A woman who rear-ended a motorcyclist last night in Anacortes called a tow truck for her damaged car but did not call 911 to get help for the man she struck, the State Patrol says.

The motorcyclist, identified as Michael J. McCurdy, 23, died this morning at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center.

State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary tells KOMO-TV the crash happened about 9:45 p.m. on state Highway 20 near Fidalgo Bay Road. McCurdy was slowing down to avoid a collision ahead of him when he was hit from behind by a car driven by a 26-year-old Mount Vernon woman.

McCurdy was knocked off his motorcycle and was hit by another car. Leary said the driver of that vehicle stopped.

However, the woman who first struck McCurdy sped away, he tells KOMO. A license plate from her car was ripped off by the impact and found at the scene of the crash.

Troopers spotted her car a short time later as it was being towed in Anacortes.

The woman told troopers she fled from the crash because she was scared, according to Leary.

The woman was booked into the Skagit County Jail for investigation of hit and run and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Wow, thats just terrible. My friends mom actually saw a very similar accident, motorcyclists got hit at night, skid across the highway , popped up, and the driver just kept speeding off into the night like nothing happened. scum.

People are so damn selfish anymore... I just can't wrap my head around it. My condolences on the loss of such a young man. All I can say is Karma will come back around for that stupid b**ch, Karma never forgives!

I never understand this! I once broadsided a car that ran a stop sign. My first reaction was to see if the other people in my car were okay. As soon as I got a quick yes from each of them I was jumping out of the car and running over to the other car to see if they were okay.

In a lot of states fleeing an accident is a lesser charge than drunk driving. So a drunk will run and hope they sobber up before being caught. I read a story like this and wonder.

Yep my natural reaction is to make sure everyone is ok. I worry about the rest after that. If a person died and I know I could have done something that may have prevented it like calling 911, I wouldnt be able to live with myself.

Dont worry she wont feel any guilt, the worst is being away from her iphone to check her facebook status and send texts. She'll get off with just a slap.
