I bought a 1000 tank to put on my 03 650 track bike. Haven't done the swap yet, but everything looks the same. I can't remember how I found out, but I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't think it would work.
Which 2nd Gen Fuel Tanks are compatible?
I'm trying to figure out which fuel tanks are compatible between the SV650 and SV1000. Anyone know if all 2nd gen (2003+) tanks work interchangeably? Also, does the SV1000 fuel tank work for all years as well?
I have a 2004 SV650 and need to purchase a fuel tank for it.

I believe they are all interchangeable, since all 2003+ 650 and 1000 SV's share the same front frame.
So, any confirmation about the SV1000 tank fitting a SV650? That would be swell cause it holds a bit more fuel from what I have read.
1st gen. tanks: 4.0 gallons CA models, all others 4.2 gallons
2nd gen. tanks: 4.2 gallons CA model, all others 4.5 gallons
SV1000 tank: 4.7 gallons
However, upon further research while writing this, it seems that some places show the gas tank to hold only 4.5 gallons as well? Anyone have some definitive input?

There is a variation for California .... dunno why... I think some mistake that with the regular SV as well there is always the US vs Imperial measures..
according to my Canadian 06 sv650s manual it is 17 liters or 4.5gal US or 3.7gal brit (imperial)
if I recall... the 1st gen was a 16 liter tank.. Perhaps for the Gen2 and SV1k there is a different tank (other than californication) for the Brits... often bike makers seem to have different parts for them for some reason...

I bought a used 03 1K tank and installed it on my 03sv, after original was damaged. It fit no prob.
All sv650 and sv1000 tanks/fillers are interchangeable.
Fuel pumps may be different though.
CA tanks have an extra emissions tube on the bottom for attachment of emissions hoses/cannister.

2nd gen anyway.... a 2002 or older tank won't work on 03+
I found with the 1000 tank you have to cut a little of the metal off the bottom on the mount for it to hinge properly. Not a big deal, it was well under where any fuel is, but it was required. Took about 5 mins with a dremel.
