OK, I have to confess that I pulled my most stupid, squidly stunt ever last night and I need some solid chastising.

I was out riding last night and having a nice, relaxed time. My tires are old and worn, so I was "cruising." Anyway, I was heading down a hill toward a fairly large intersection (2 lanes in 4 directions, each also has a left turn lane so 12 lanes total) that was reasonably busy for the time of day. Anyway, coming down the hill, I see the turning arrow go green and the car 1st in line not moving. As I get closer, I downshift a few times, beep the horn twice and still nothing. So, I slow down to low 1st gear...and (ashamed to admit it) simply go around the guy on his right aggressively enough to avoid any move he might make. In retrospect it was a total asshat move (not to mention reasonably dangerous). The non turning lanes beside me had a red light (so I figured he wasn't going to turn right into me). But, and here's the kicker. About a minute later, I see flashing lights behind me  I quickly slowed and pulled off the road to let the EMT by. My immediate first thought was that I had checked shortly after my dumbass move and thought "well, lucky this time stupid, no police coming." So, I really REALLY, don't think that he approaching the intersection when I went through. But WTF is wrong with me? Anyway, I post this because I realized later that I applied my blanket assumption that the idiot was lost and simply refusing to go through the arrow.

Lesson learned: things are not necessarily as they seem. If something is odd, take time to think about the OTHER reasons.

Right turn arrow or left? Also, did you look around the intersection much or just kinda make your turn?

No offense...I've done worse squiddy stuff (riding up the side, etc). I ask because my commute to work takes me through about 12 lights. People constantly keep running the reds. So often when the light turns green for me, people are still coming!

Yeah, it was a left turn arrow. I felt pretty safe going through it as I had watched it turn green about 10 seconds before I started slowing down.

And I called the local Fire Dept. (partly to assess if I was that out of it and just missed a big red SUV with lights/siren). They said that their guys weren't even responding to the accident I later passed and that it was likely the next county's squad (we have a mess of counties all in close proximity). Anyway, if that is the case, then the EMT SUV that ultimately passed me would have been coming directly at me (and I couldn't possibly have missed that). It's sounding more conincidental than idiotic at this point. Still, it doesn't diminish my asshat pass on the sitting car.

i ran out to home depot last night and was a little squidly myself.

no jacket to begin with - it was too hot even for the mesh. i did wear gloves though

took the outside track on some of the clover leafs coming off the highway. there wasn't really two lanes, but more than 1.5, so i was able to gun it a little harder and zip past the slow moving minivans.

coming back into town, i lane split at every light just so i wouldn't ahve to stop and bake.

my name is stranger, and i was a squid last night

I don't consider lane splitting to be squidly. As long as you do it properly and at a sane speed. I do it often on my way home from work. As long as you don't rip down the middle of two lanes it not that big a deal. Legal in some states too if I recall.

"Look at him. He knows what he did"
-Peter Griffin, after the pet rock pees on the floor.

I think you realize what you did, and by doing so, are a non-squid rider. I think all of us at least once has done something like this, or something they're not proud of. I wouldn't worry about it do much.

All is forgiven.

Ride on.

yeah, same here!I always wear gloves though. It seems to me harley riders wear less "protection" than squids themselves.I get kind of annoyed when everyone pokes at the squids for not wearing gear, when %90 of the harley riders(around here) wear shorts,no shirt and a little skull-cap.Most the squids wear jeans and a full face helmet.

sorry for the rant, and for the hi-jacking

yup, just did that in my truck (i had the motorcycle in the back, so this is still a motorcycle story  ). had my music way too loud and just came off the highway (music was up to combat wind noise)... came up to a guy going WAAAYYY too slow so I gave him a good dose of the truck horn and blasted around him.. then realized he was slowing for an ambulance  .

oh well. road rage kicks in faster than my intellect.

kinda funny, i used an ambulance for a 80mph escort down the freeway in the car last nite... made record time too! he was behind me for a good five minutes before finally catchin up and pulling alongside, then i stayed beside and to the rear switchin behind him from time to time. this went on for a good 10 miles before my exit. Must've been transporting. it was a MedFlight anyway.

The punishment is instant

It's like breaking traffic laws. If you get away with it then there is no punishment. If you don't, then the punishment is swift and severe. Like the guy making an outside lane out of "1 1/2" lanes on expressway ramps. One driver changes the station on the radio and he is toast, and in the wrong legally.

It reminds me of an old joke. Two guys are working in an office in an old highrise building. It's a beautiful day so they have the window open. All of a sudden someone falls past the widow yelling. One guy asks the other, "Did you see that? Did you recognize him?" The second guy says, "No, I didn't recognize him. Some optimist from the upper floors, I guess". The first guy is puzzled and asks, "How do you know he was an optimist?" The second guy answers, "As he fell past the window he shouted out 'So far, so good'".
