Where you at in VA? I just had to bust the SV out for the high 50s Christmas.:p
Hampton Roads/VA Beach area....and it was in the low 70's on Sunday for us:rolleyes: Figures that we'd get perfect weather when I can't ride.

Ranger01.....you think starting with the water pump would be the safest? I hadn't read about anyone having issues with their water pump gasket? I guess it's definitely easier to rule out then having to mess with the heads! Doesn't seem like this issue is very common. I'm just amazed that it would happen to me. I don't dog my bike at all, it's garage kept, regular maintenance on schedule, etc.:(

I had an issue with the water pump but it leaked out, not in. With that level of pollution I'd be looking at the freeze plugs, though obviously that's more likely to be a problem if it's actually been freezing ;)

It's just a thought since the coolant is already gone you don't have to drain it to take the cover off since it's on the clutch cover. I've not gone into the heads, yet. I plan on doing the valve clearance check this weekend.

I did order Sonic Springs, fork oil and picked up OEM fork seals.

The only other thing would be if you just poured water straight into the motor while it was running
Nope a bad water pump seal will do it too.

I was 20 degrees one of the days that I was gone and the bike had been sitting for a month. I guess I to would question whether a blown gasket would actually leak all of my coolant that quickly into the oil??? I was going to start the actual engine tear down yesterday, but decided to add a second set of florecent lights to the garage first.

So much for racing to install my heated grips:rolleyes:

Put on some frame sliders, added the tank pads I got before Xmas, and actually got to ride !

Installed the Minus1 fender elim kit...

Took a bit had to have some patience on this task!

Mmm, that's, what, -6 in proper temperature? Do you run antifreeze or winter coolant? If not, then I'd say you might have a winner, but you need to go way cooler if you do use some sort of antifreeze. But don't rule out gaskets, it wouldn't have to leak fast to get that result, if the bike's been laid up.

Huh. I can't actually remember where the plugs are in the SV, are they not in the cylinder head? Sunk down beside the spark plugs? Nice and easy to check if they are. But that's kind of the vaguest of memories, I can only ever remember hearing of one SV owner who had that happen to them. Then again, I've never heard of a head gasket failure on bikes that aren't madly tuned.

Hope you get it sorted easily!

We made a video..of me riding. My oldest son drove his car while his brother in the rear seat filmed. Did a few power passes and drive along shots. Turned out ok, but the sound was bad. We have a Toyota Corolla and when the rear window is down the car has a strange wind sound. Also did some filming from a stopped position..turned out much better. Wife not amused. The boys will play...

Now that's funny I could picture my wife's face!!

Some people just add music and leave out the sound due to the wind noise...

Hi Spacecoast, Pictures or video? Please link us to it or it didn't happen. :D

Happy New Year!

Had antifreeze in it. I don't really know how quickly it pour into the engine oil because she'd been sitting all month. I let her warm up, and made a short 20 mile ride with no issues. It was on the way back 2 hours or so later....I didn't really let her warm up (it was about 60+ degrees out) and I was in a rush to get home. She fired right up and off I went. On my way home I noticed the coolant light was on...

So, the water pump O-ring looks fine, the freeze plugs appear to be in tact and in place in the front and rear head. So, I guess the engine is coming out between today and tomorrow so that I can see whether it's actually a blown head gasket.

Someone mentioned that I could have cracked the engine. How likely is that. The bike was run earlier in the day. The temps were warm. For those that know me....I'm not really a high RPM rider. If the head gasket isn't blown....??? what is my next option?

How many miles on the bike?

the Gen II's have a seal between the oil and coolant...in the cover assembly. If that seal goes bad, which has been known to happen, it can let the coolant by into the oil pathways. You would have to drain both the oil and coolant, take the clutch side cover and water pump off, and replace that seals, as well as the gaskets along the way.

I would not think head gasket unless you were pushing the motor really hard while it was still cold. I'd check the seal at the water pump shaft first..personally.

Went for my ride, was off the last 2 days so it feels like its Sunday. Was a little overcast at the beach but it cleared up. News Year Day is a great day to go riding there was hardly anyone on the roads.

Did pass a group of sportbikes at a gas station on PCH just before Jamboree, they were headed somewhere?!
