backstory: a couple weeks ago, I was leading a group ride, mostly of bikes much faster than my 01 SV650. The closest rider to me was about 1/2 mile back or so but we were coming up on a LONG straight and I knew I'd have 3 or 4 bikes buzzing by me, or at least right up to me, before I got halfway down the straight. The last couple corners going onto the straight look fairly tight but in reality are barely even turns. I knew the guys riding with me would hit them fairly slow so I hit the first one in 5th gear and got into 6th by the time I got to the last corner. Sure enough, about 1/4 mile down the straight, I'm JUST shy of the rev limiter in 6th, past the point in the RPMs where peak power is made. I let it down just a hair but I'm still going down that straight at or near redline in 6th for about 2 miles.... At the next stop, I noticed the bike was dropping a cylinder at idle. I shut it off and let it cool down a bit. Head home and on the way, I could feel it dropping a cylinder every once in a while... Great. So, I park the bike for about a week and don't really worry too much about it. Last week, I got around to checking it out. Figured out which cylinder wasn't firing (horizontal). I was fairly confident it was getting fuel, I just rebuild the carbs a month or two ago and everything was spotless and in good working order, so I checked for spark. No spark on that plug. Tested the ignition coil and it was fine. Traced the wires from the ignition coil and they were connected and had good continuity. In my experience, all this = bad ECM, so I hit ebay and scored a used on for $40 (fingers crossed that it's not bad too, electronics on ebay make me paranoid lol)
Ebay special ECM came in today, so I installed it and the bike runs like a champ again. I need to rewire the rear turn signals and tidy up the wiring in the trunk so I left the tail off (not necessary, just gives a little more room to work)
