What are you giving up for lent?

Although I'm not a religious person at all, the thought of giving up a worldly pleasure for a lengthy amount of time has a certain humbleness to it.

And others would say its just stupid.

Goodbye internet. Tomorrow. Or maybe the next day...

Heard of it but I wouldn't make the psychic connection next year either. Honestly I haven't gone to church since I was maybe 13 or 14 years old.
I hear ya. I only know because as I mentioned earlier on, I was raised in a pretty strict hispanic catholic family. No offense intended hoss.
I just don't like the way many non-religious people are such a$$holes toward religious people. I see more of that than the other way around.

It seems the religious people are being @55holes to the OTHER religious people more then the non-religious are are being a-holes to anybody. The point of my last three posts was to say that Solid shouldn't be giving the Catholics sh!t for how they choose to worship "God" and I'M an a-hole?
Can't we all just get along?

Phuck off dick-lick.
Kill kill kill
Tee hee look what I did.
It's kind of like fishing, just cast it out there and see who takes the bait...
I'm giving up credit cards for lent. Cash only for the next 39 days.
How is that a sacrifice? It's really nothing more than being fiscally responsible...

It is the convenience.
HEY-I forbid you to give up sex.

One of my work pals usually gives up meat for lent, so I bring him a sausage biscuit for b-fast every morning.
My god does that sound good right now. guess i know what i'm getting for breakfast on teh way to work tomorrow. thanks!
Let's see...

Three year's ago it was ice cream (I have to have some once a day)
Two year's ago it was french fries (for some reason I was addicted to them leading up to Lent)
Last year was Panera Bread (I ate there every day I traveled for work...which was a lot!)

This year, I don't know if I can do it, but I'm giving up beer. Not alcohol...no way I could do the whole kit-n-kaboodle... JUST BEER.
The scripture I quote earlier(the non highlighted parts) also indicate against "Idolatry." Which just so happens to be a large part of many religions including Catholicism...

...I wasn't born in a Christian family, nor did I attend church regularly when I was younger, yet here I am today, a follower of Christ. If it's 'truth' you are after, the Bible has plenty of that, though you may have first erase all preconceived notions of "Christianity" to get to it. A difficult task, I'm sure. Lucky for me, I did not have too many of those preconceived ideas to begin with.
What you don't seem to be able to comprehend about tcl's position in this discussion are facts that you and others have already posted: That the bible, the koran, and any other religious "scripture" was written, compiled, and published by MEN, not god (at least that's what I am able to gather, since my mind is unfettered by religion).

It is no more the word or spirit of god than "The Great Gatsby", or "Moby Dick". If you want truth, read non-fiction.

The only difference between Christianity and Scientology is that one has been around longer.

That's what people without faith in God thinks. Not surprising at all. Matter fact, I thought the same at one point(majority of my life). The Bible is clear in saying that scripture is "God-breathed." Again I wont go into detail, but yes it was compiled and written by human hands, but with the inspiration of God's Spirit. And if one recognises the "Spirit," it would be clear that Scripture is overflowing with it.

Matthew 22:28-29 (New King James Version)

28 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.

Mark 12:23-25 (New King James Version)

23 Therefore, in the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be? For all seven had her as wife.”
24 Jesus answered and said to them, “Are you not therefore mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

If you do not have Faith(which so happens to be a "requirement") all the Bible is going to be to you is a bunch of words in a Book. Nothing more.

I'm not here to convert atheists to believers. so I' wont waste my time telling exactly what I believe or argue my view points. To do so is meaningless. If one truly wants to learn about the truth behind God and His Word, they would simply seek out the answers themselves. And if we are half-assed in searching, guess what kind of answer we are going to find? I think it's pretty clear.

This is how I go about it:

Isaiah 28:9-13 (New King James Version))

9 “ Whom will he teach knowledge?
And whom will he make to understand the message?
Those just weaned from milk?
Those just drawn from the breasts?
10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept,
Line upon line, line upon line,
Here a little, there a little.”
11 For with stammering lips and another tongue
He will speak to this people,
12 To whom He said, “This is the rest with which
You may cause the weary to rest,”
And, “This is the refreshing”;
Yet they would not hear.
13 But the word of the LORD was to them,

“ Precept upon precept, precept upon precept,
Line upon line, line upon line,
Here a little, there a little,”
That they might go and fall backward, and be broken
And snared and caught.
To just take 1 line from Scripture using one's own understanding(interpretation) and running with it without first verifying with other scripture is what most seem to do nowadays. Thus we got all these different sects and denominations and junk (which so happens to also be unscriptural or against Biblical teachings). This act is the source of most if not all confusion regarding God's Word.

I don't force my beliefs on anyone. But if someone runs around telling people they are "saved" and of Christ, yet spews nonsense that contradicts the book which is supposedly the basis of their belief, I usually will say something about it.

If anyone has questions, I encourage them to seek out the answers themselves, and pray for understanding. God keeps His word, no doubt about it.
