I have nearly 15K miles on my Gen 3, so I'm planning to check the valve clearances soon (even though they probably won't need adjusting).

When replacing the cam covers, what's the preferred sealant for the rubber half-moons? I have some high-temp black silicone RTV, and also Blue Hylomar. Should I also put a trace of sealant around the whole gasket too, or leave it dry?

Thanks.

Black Rtv only around the half-moons. As long as the gasket is in good condition and pliable, no need to replace it. It goes on dry. Light taps with a soft plastic or rubber mallet will help to loosen the valve cover and keep the gasket intact.

For what it's worth, did the check recently at 15,300 miles. Cam covers came off easily, gaskets were re-used with no leaks. Getting the rear cam cover out without removing the fuel tank is a bit fiddly but not difficult.

All inlet valves were 5 thou' and all exhaust valves at 8 thou', so no adjustments needed, which was nice.
