Aftermarket exhaust with an ECU flash or Power Commander and dyno tune are really the only things that are reliably going to show a noticeable improvement. Cam swapping will pick up 1-3hp (maybe), but not much more. Suspension is always the big game changer and there are a lot of different ways to go about that.
But in the end, the single best mod you can do to an SV (or any bike for that matter) is the rider mod.. ;)

would it be possibale to swop the sv 1000 barrels and pistons from say a sv 1000 on too a sv650s crank case or am i just being ignorant as to how to up upgrade my sv 650s
I've got a top end off of a Gladius going cheap or just use the cams?
