Trunk advice

5114 Views 42 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  scott26
I hate riding with a backpack and have decided I want to get a trunk for the SV. I do a lot of errands on the bike and I think it will be nice to have a hard case to carry groceries and what not. Im not looking to go all out and spend the money on a Givi or the like, so Ive decided on this cheaper one from jcwhitney: http://www.jcwhitney.com/MATTE-BLACK-TRAVEL-TRUNKS/GP_2010969_N_111+10211+600014603_10111.jcw

Now the decision is down to what size I should get. The dimensions on each are as follows:

Medium - 17-1/2"W x 15"L x 11"H
Large - 22-1/2"W x 16-1/2"L x 11"H

I kind of want to get the large b/c I feel like I will want the extra room if I dont have it. However, I dont want something that is going to look totally ridiculous (size wise) on the bike. Does anybody have one of these or a trunk of a similar size that can comment on the utility and look of it on the bike?

Thanks.

did you ever think about getting some cortech sport saddle bags. I have a pair and they are great and easy to put on and remove.

peace...murfy.

Oh and that medium is what I would get if I wanted a trunk for the SV.
Any idea why that link goes through "www.anrdoezrs.net" which is apparently some sort of tracking or ad service? (my computer is blocking it)

I havent looked at those but I want something that I can leave on the bike and not get jacked. well not jacked as easily....

no idea. I just ctrl+c and ctrl+v the link straight outta the browser. lets try this again:

http://www.jcwhitney.com/MATTE-BLAC...0303745&catalogId=10101&langId==1&PID=3212689

You can also get there by going to www.jcwhitney.com > (main nav) Motorcycle > (side nav) > For your bike > Luggage > Trunks.

.....not that you would go through all that trouble :D
I'm not a fan of hard cases due to look and the poor positioning for weight distribution, but then it would be nice to have a hard case with a lock.

I just can't do it. Have you looked at tail bags and saddle bags? I stick all of my groceries in them and they work well. I can pack most things in the tail bag and just carry it in without having to unload a trunk.

I only see (after forced hard reloads multiple times) on that page:

liveperson.net
google-analytics.com
jcwhitney.com

But the main jcwhitney.com page and others have a bunch of ad companies:

imiclk.com
abmr.net
advertising.com
exponential.com

etc.

Woohoo for data mining and ads.

No need for me to find it- I'm familiar with them. I guess JCW uses it to track where its site is being linked from.

The general consensus is that they are great for the money, as for size, you seem to be asking a subjective question and my answer to that would be the larger one looks fine. I have something very similar (probably the same chinese factory) and it is the larger size. I have it so it snaps into where my passenger seat would be.

If you search this site, you should be ale to fin pics of that exact trunk mounted on various svs.

Yea I was wondering about the weight distribution myself. But heck for $85 its not that much of an investment. Im sure I could sell it if I dont like it.

Ive got a the "fieldsheer expander" tail bag which i really like, but I dont want to drag it around with me when I'm off the bike. It just straps on with bungees so it wouldn't take much for somebody to swipe it.

This is why I have mine mounted super low and forward on the passenger seat. It's not near as high as everyone else as instead of taking the mount plate and sticking it on top of the passenger seat, I took the bracket off the seat and stuck it to the bottom of the plate. The 46L case just snugs against my back if I scoot all the way back in my seat and there is just barely enough room to unlock it with the grab bar still installed.

But if you just mouse over the posted link, what does it say down in your browser? I have that and a thousand other ad sites mis-directed in my local host file.

WAIT! there are some coupons and free shipping.... should cost 56 shipped. Go look on advrider.com but I think someone just posted the link on svr as well.

Yeah, that's how I'd do it if I were to get a hard trunk. I just think they're so fugly I can't do it. :)

Ah, I see what you mean now.

So I just tried entering http://jcwhitney.com and hit "preview post" and, upon mouseover, it redirects it through that site without my typing it in. I tried a few other generic popular URLs as well as some popular motorcycle-related URLS and it only did this behavior with jcwhitney. Try it out for yourself.

Great, I'm going to be looking out for that a lot more now.

Must have something to do with the new forum ownership. Verrry interesting.
I have the middle size case and i wish i got the bigger one. So i would say get the big case.
Get the big one and a spare passenger seat.

I got two for less than $110 shipped. You should be able to find a promotional code for free shipping for orders above $50.

They look like crap anyway, so get the big one. Color-matched looks a little better if you can paint it. The advantages are that you can store a helmet in there, they are lockable, rain proof, and convenient. The disadvantages are that they look like crap, they can make the bike handle squirrely at speed, it can be a hassle to mount them and dismount them from the bike, and they make it harder for you to swing your leg over the bike.

No matter what system you use, you still are going to have limited storage volume compared to the trunk of a car. I would rather use a milk crate or cardboard box and some bungees, or even just a bungee net over the grocery bag for the occasional run to get a couple of items from the store, but if you run a lot of errands and don't mind the look, go for it.

Hard sidecases are a bit more pleasing aesthetically but they would probably cost a lot more.
I know a lot of people dislike how they look and say get soft luggage, but the idea of a hard locking box really appeals to me. This fall I will be commuting into the city to main campus and I will need some type of locking luggage to store my helmet and other gear while in school. I would get the larger one. Carrying my gear AND books/laptop all day is not an option so I have to be able to leave the gear at the bike.

thanks for the pic. that is exactly how i was planning to mount mine. ive already got another rear seat assembly to mount it to so i will still have the regular seat for a passenger.

Did you just drill through the seat foam to mount it? I was thinking i would take the foam off and mount it directly to the plastic base plate but if this works, I may just do it that way.

I cant get that freekin coupon to work tho. :(
Same here Coop. I'm not going to carry full gear around campus all day, no way in hell. Helmet will still go on the helmet hanger, and pants and jacket will go in the hardcase. The hardcase will also let me wear a backpack at school without carrying a backpack on my back while riding.
I just posted this yesterday.

I don't know if you've seen this before, spotch, but I'm fairly certain it still works:

I got my case like this last summer.
Don't do it!!!!!! Save yourself a headache and get yourself a GIVI Case..!!!! I had 2 different jc boxes and they were both junk..Get a GIVI traffic. It a decent size and good quality. The mounting bracket broke on both on my whitney boxes and the lock broke on one..get the givi..Buy quality and cry once!!!!!! Tom

PS-once you ride a bike with a trunk you will never go back to a backpack.....
I have a large Givi monokey top box that will almost fit 2 helmets. I'd sell it for $120 shipped with a mounting(lockable quick release) plate and a striped sv rear seat . The seat (1st gen)does not have seat cover so the mounting plate can be bolted to it. The seat is missing the hardware that attaches it to the bike ,so you'd have to take the hardware off the rear seat you have. Pm if any one is interested.
