Gotta wonder why the party that thinks it's patriotic to tax the rich keep getting hung up on ... un-paid taxes.

Yeah, I'm with you. It's seems to me that his friend that offered him the use of the car and driver should be paying the taxes.
But since he's already filed the ammended returns and paid the taxes and interest, this is a non-issue.
How is this a non-issue, Dems want to raise taxes on the "rich", but do not even pay what they owe. The head of the Treasury department and now Daschle should both be punished for tax evasion, like any other American citizen. The Treasury sec got audited for two years and had to pay, and then before accepting the nomination had to pay two more years of back taxes, that is blatant disregard for the law of the land and there is no way he should have been confirmed. They should audit the entire Senate and House of Reps, and see how many are crooks.

If you read the artical you will note that he did pay what he owed with interest. You would get the same privlage if you were to be audited and they found that you owed them money.
2 grand is a non-issue ... 10 grand is worry ... but 100K is criminal .... I don't know how a 100K in un-paid taxes could be considered a non-issue.

And yes, I think all memebers of congress should be audited on an annual basis ... I think you'll find Repubs and Dems alike are equally guilty of trying to hide from paying taxes ... I just find the Dems to be hypocritical when they do it.
Yes he paid, but only after getting caught and after getting caught he only paid for what he was audited over, he only paid 2 more years of back taxes right before being notified he was being nominated, so he knowingly cheated on his taxes. I dont care if I get audited because I do not cheat on my taxes.
The rich get away with a lot - until they get caught. It has and will always be like that. :D
Well, I don't think Tom Daschle is a tax lawyer. Have you read through and thoroughly understand the 10,000 pages of US tax law? I know chaffeurs and limos aren't in turbo tax!

Give the guy a break! If they caught him not declaring salary, I would be angry. But something I wouldn't even know where to being placing value on or would consider income, hardly sounds like him purposefully defrauding the government.

Give the guy a break? 100K in unpaid taxes? 300K+ in unreported income? No, people like this have Tax lawyers to do their returns and find loopholes to hide money and income. It's when they suddenly have to be "vetted" for higher government positions, all of a sudden ... oops ... oh yeah ... there's that pesky 300K i didn't report ...

I'm sorry, but 300 grand in un reported income is not an honest mistake.

Don't you understand? He's a Democrat, ergo he can do no wrong. If you found him waiting at the bottom of a delivery table with a knife and fork buried in a newborn and had photographic evidence it would still be acceptable. Only Republicans and Conservatives can err. William "Cold Hard Cash" Jefferson hasn't been heard much about recently either, has he? You better believe that if it were you, me, or ANY Republican member of government that story would be run every half hour at the top of the headlines.

But of course, media bias is just a "right wing delusion".
I'm just tired of Democrats making excuses for democrats and Republicans making excuses for republicans ... you'd think it's about time the American people expected and demanded better from their polititians ... I'm just tired of the do as I say not as I do attitude.

We were promised change ... so far we're just getting more of the same.
Don't think I'm standing up for Republicans. I'm not, and both are equally despicable. I am instead pointing out that the Democrat faithful would find fault in a Republican tying his shoes with an alternate knot. Make it a Democrat though, and they would line up to create a "wall of jack-a55es" to defend even the most flagrant transgression. Couple what with a sycophantic media always there to help cover the flank, and you have an almost insurmountable force.

The new media helps to combat, but the old stream does its best to discredit anything they can making it hard for information to get out. Americans are a busy lot, and on the whole do not have time to sift through the 24 hour barage of information to compare and contrast opposing stories and find the truth in the middle.

You completely contradict yourself. If he's got a tax lawyer doing his taxes, shouldn't HE have reproted it? How would Daschel know that it needs to be reported if his lawyer didn't tell him?
Maybe I missed something but where does it say he's got 300k in unreported income?

**EDIT** I see now. It's a completely different article. That's different. The car and driver thing is a non issue. The unreported salary is quite and issue. But just like you or me, he gets the opportunity to submit an ammended return and pay the taxes and interest. Nothing wrong with that. It's only illegal if you get caught.
Daschle recently filed amended tax returns to report $128,203 in back taxes and $11,964 in interest. The amended returns reflect additional income for consulting work, the use of a car service and reduced deductions for charitable contributions.

The full article. . . http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090201/ap_on_go_pr_wh/daschle_taxes_22

The media is latching to the car and driver bit to sweep the income from consulting work and lying about charitable contributions under the carpent
from cnn http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/30/daschle.taxes/index.html?section=cnn_latest

A committee memo obtained Friday by CNN indicates that committee members want to discuss the use of a car and driver that Daschle didn't disclose on his income taxes, and nonpayment of taxes on more than $80,000 he earned in consulting fees after leaving the Senate.
Daschle also once filed a tax form listing charitable donations to organizations that did not qualify for a deduction, according to the memo.
OK that kinda makes me mad, the car and driver thing I can see as an honest mistake. But getting money and not reporting it is quite another offense. But as stated, if he's got a tax accountant, then he wouldn't know anything about it. You don't pay a guy 300/hour to do your taxes to hold his hand throughout the entire process.
New tax form 1040D (for Dems):

Line 1: Are you a Democrat?
Line 2: How much income do you want to declare for this year?
Line 3: How much tax do you feel like paying on that income?

;D

i agree
