Just a quick thanks to the oncoming SV rider who tapped his helmet to let me know there was a hidden speed trap just South of Bodega Bay on Saturday afternoon (9/23/12).

I had my forgotten to turn on my radar detector and would have sailed right into it. That simple courtesy saved me hundreds of dollars and a wicked buzz kill. Thanks.

I used to tap the top of my helmet, but got flicked off a number of times by squids or harley riders. I now do a 5 - 0 with my hand.

I've only seen top-of-head warnings. I always let other motorcyclists know if there is a cop down the road. However, I never feel obliged to let cagers know. I don't know why that is. It's not that I want them to get a ticket. Maybe it's that I feel like I'd be betraying a biker code or something.

Anyway, glad you had someone watching out for you. I've been on the receiving end of those warnings and was immensely grateful.

I tap the top of my helmet. Actually I've only had the situation occur twice. Once I got a thumbs up by a Harley rider in the mountains, and once I got no response from a sportbike rider.

I've never had anyone give me any signals of any kind. Well, except for the wave of course.

I try to let other riders know I got the message with an "OK" hand signal.

I let sport bikes know with a pat on the helmet. I dont really bother with Harley riders unless I can tell they are speeding. Around here, they mostly just cruise at an annoyingly slow pace since the majority are from out of town/state.

****, that might just have been me that gave you the warning! I went past that same spot on Saturday and was warning people about the trap, as someone had previously done for me.

It was a good day.

I've read an article recently (forgot where) that tipping people off to a cop ahead was illegal. Something to keep in mind I guess.

I remember reading something that said after it went to trial that it was a legal expression of free speech.

actually, the signal is to alert others about some emergency vehicle ahead. i'll use it to warn others of a tow truck, fire truck, wreck, whatever hazard is there. i've had cars flash their lights at me as a warning, so i'll give the warning to any other vehicle.

It was a very good day ! I left the house at 8 in the morning to pick something up at the store and got home about 6 in the evening.

Again, thanks for being a good biker citizen ...

I'm not saying you shouldn't be doing it, or that it's wrong, just saying there have been people harassed by cops for doing it. Though the article, I think, related more to cars.

I believe that is more towards flashing a cars high beams, which is illegal in most states because you aren't supposed to use high beams within XXXfeet of oncoming traffic.

I used to do the head tap all the time in Cali, and usually gave a thumbs up in reply when warned. There were even som days in the Malibu canyons where thumbs up were used to indicate a clear road in normal "hiding spots".

I don't think I have seen one rider give a warning since living on the east coast for over 2yrs now. Then again the number of riders I will see when i do go out for a ride out here is way lower too.

I stand on my seat, drop my pants and throw a fistful of pocket change at the oncoming biker. I thought that was the universal sign. Guess I've probably confused and pissed off a lot of people.

I had a guy flip me off. Maybe he thought it meant "Hey, wear a helmet, you moron" or something like that. I could tell he was flying so I turned around and sure enough, he was pulled over. I flipped him off as I went by. :naughty:
