Taking off top triple.

Anyway,

Converting from faired to naked and I bought some stock headlight brackets. Although I can't seem to get the top triple clamp off. I've got everything loose, but I can't figure out how it comes off. Do I need some type of puller? Do I need to remove the ignition?

Thanks, Trevor

YOu should be able to do it with ignition installed as long as the steering lock isnt engaged.

Is the front end suspended? That usually helps.

After that, a block of wood and an mallet. Tap it gently.

Thats what I thought. I removed the caps for the forks, and the middle cap. Then I removed all the accessories except the ignition and beat it with a mallet but it wasn't budging.

How can I suspend the front?

This is how I usually do it...

Can you work those straps to the lower triple and suspend? Or the headstock?

The weight of the bike on the front wheel might be the limiter here, paralellogramming the forks to the headstock creating too much pressure or friction to remove without suspending it.
That was a pic from a long time ago. The bike is together. I'm just fixing/replacing/and changing some parts on it.

Its got the front wheel on it now. But thats usually how I suspend it.

I was thinking maybe strap around the side of the frame?

I'll mess with it some more and let you know how it works out. Thanks V9!;)
Even a floor jack and some wood under the engine, just to alleviate the weight from the wheel/forks. Give it a try.
Yeah, I'll definitely give that a try. Thanks!
I just took mine off. Look at the thread I started in the Maintenance forum. You'll see pics describing how to get it off.

The thread is titled with something about the GSX-R.
Just a FYI....

My brother changed his top triple to a naked (1st gen S), and used the cap nut that came with. The problem was, that the cap nut bottomed out before it came up tight against the top triple. So either use the nut that you had, or be prepared for the possibility of having to hit the hardware store for a machine bushing or two.

You did remove the pinch bolts correct? If so, take a flat head screw driver and GENTLY open the slots on the triple. It should come off then.

I beat you to it!
Dang that's what I get for skipping to the end, LOL.
Okay, thats probably what I didn't do. I'm simply just putting the headlight brackets on. I was just going to buy the expensive ones but I am a pretty poor kid right now and already bought these...besides...I really want to ride;D

I imagine the screw driver trick will work nicely! I'll give it a try.

Thanks
Okay, got the triple off. Just needed some help from the mallet. lol.

Anyway, now I need to cut, shorten, and weld the headlight brackets because they will not fit with the clip ons. I just found this out:( Oh well, just another step. lol.

In this thread you'll find inexpensive clamps from McMaster Carr. Takes them generally one to two days to deliver. I got mine in 22 hours.

You'll see two types of clamps. I ordered the cheaper ones, but will order those that DougZ mentioned at a later date.

Whats the diameter of those fork tubes on the thread? I know my stock ones are 41mm. Just don't want to buy ones bigger than I need. lol
