I've searched but I can't seem to find somebody else with the same problem...

My bike is parked outside with no cover, and I just recently added on a remus high mount slip on. It has been raining lately but it has never been a problem starting up, only the front cylinder would die when i ride it in the rain.

However when I started it today, it started up fine and I put the choke on to warm it up then it would start sputtering the rpms would drop down 1500 rpms or so for 5 seconds then snap back up to where i set the choke. I'm 100% sure the spark plugs aren't wet, since I dried them out a couple days ago and haven't ridden the bike since. Everything else is clean carbs, air filter, etc. I am baffled to why the bike is sputtering since the bike always starts up no problem.

any ideas?

Check the drain under the filler cap to the left of the filler neck. That hole goes to a tube that runs through the tank, to a nipple at the back/bottom of the tank, to a rubber hose. If that drain is clogged you could have gotten water in the tank.

Since it sounds like it's only one cylinder that's not the most likely culprit. Most likely one carb is just dirty enough that the idle circuit is plugged. If so, it's a good idea to pull and clean them both. If one is clogged, the other one probably isn't far behind.

My first '01 never had that problem. I'm on my second '01 (long story) that I had stored for a while. At 7,600 miles it's doing the same thing. It runs OK under load, but on overrun or idle it has an irregular miss. I'm going to pull the carbs soon.

That's so funny. I had the same sort of problems when starting it up with the choke fully on and the bike starting up then sputtering out. Would often have to start it up 2 to 3 times. Since I also installed my Remus high mount I found starting up to be much easier. It starts on the first try with choke on 90% of the time now. I really doubt it is the exhaust, but could be the rain water. Sounds like it's time to invest in a cover.
By the way did you also get in on the Remus deal?
