Last week this guy walked into the copy/print store where I work because he had a few things he wanted copied from his younger years. The old newspaper he pulled out were some old motocross race pictures. Needless to say I was very interested in what he had to say about them. The pictures were of him when he raced motocross in the early 70's. We talked quite a bit about his racing days and riding now. After we talked for probably an hour I told him about the local motocross area just down the road that he might want to check out.

Today he brought in the following picture of himself at Daytona. He is #18, Michael/Mike Burns and the #1 plate is Kenny Roberts. I knew who the #1 was pretty quick. I don't know much about the race circuit back in the 70's so I still don't know much about him other that what he's told me. Some of you may remember him, but I don't. He's a really interesting guy with some interesting stories.

When you like in a small town like I do its rare occasion that someone like this guy ever walks in the door. It's fun to talk about old bikes and riding with someone like him. Yep, it was a good day today. I know this isn't a very good picture, but its a copy of an old copy of an old newspaper. I just wanted to share my interesting day.

T: That is way too cool!!!
Yes extremely cool! especially since he's someone that raced Kenny Roberts and lived to talk about it!

That name does sound really really familiar but I can't really pin it down to anything. I've heard my dad mention it though while talking about the old RD's and GS' and the rest of the bikes he owned in highschool.
Very, very cool. :)

Given the #1 on Roberts' bike, that had to be either '74 or '75. I'm guessing your buddy was getting lapped. ;D
Comparing the form that each of the riders have, I'd say good 'ol Mr. Burns is definitely getting lapped. Still, more than I've ever done with a bike...
His comment was "yeah, that's Kenny Roberts, he was GOOD!"
Hi tlc, great picture, not good copy. Was it in color and faded out?

Noticed the motorhomes in the back.
It was an old faded copy of a newspaper. So really poor copy. One of the motorhomes in the background is actually his that he used.
He was passed on the outside!

I wish I could do that for a living!

My mom was a Realtor with Bob Morgan, the pilot of the Memphis Belle, he had great stories of raisin hell and dropping bombs...by looking at him you would have figured he was just another grampa.

Older generations are a great source of history.
Great post! Great picture! Thanks!
I'm probably as old as he is. I never dreamed of racing against #1. Always thought it was better to ride alone and THINK I'm fast than to race #1 and find out how slow I REALLY am!! So what if maybe he was getting lapped? Anyone who criticizes him for that should race against the best.
It takes guts to put it on the line like that. Your customer is cool. Hope you see him again.

It's better to get out there do it, no matter what the reality. :)

I wasn't being critical or derogatory in any way in my comment. I've been in that exact position, getting lapped by an AMA champion*. I was just happy to be out there. :)

*Although in my case it was in a club race, not Daytona. The one time I raced at Daytona there were no AMA champ level guys in my race. :)
Hey RichDesmond
You're right - it's better to get out there & do it.
I envy your racing experience. A little late for me to start at age 63, but I think I will look for a track day this year.
Gotta get the suspension sorted out first. Just got this bike, already hate the front end & not too crazy about the shock.
Do you have any experience with cartridge emulators?

The main problem with the front end is the weak springs and too thin fork oil. Emulators help some, but getting the spring rate and overall damping right is the biggest priority.

Track days are a lot of fun, highly recommended. :)
That is way cool. In my means of transportation to the general vicinity in which I need to work in on any given week, I have met quite a few interesting people as well. I'm always open to great convo from people that have lived way more than I.
