Setting the preload

Hello

I just got my new '05 SV650 (in blue) delivered about 10 minutes ago. Unfortunately i'ts too dark to go riding round now.

I had a question about setting the front and rear preloads though. In the book it shows HOW to set the preloads, but not what they should be set to in relationship to rider/load weight.

I weigh 125lbs, and so far don't have any luggage. I'm not going to be railing any corners as i'm still new to this whole motorcycle thing, so what should my preload be? The factory setting is level 3 in the front and rear, but should i make it softer since i'm so light?

Thanks for the help

The stock SV supsenion is already too soft. It is setup best for lighter riders already which is one of the reasons for a lot of people changing springs, shocks and so on. I think you will be fine leaving it where it is and just learn how to ride the bike for now and the basics of cornering. I have taken mine through some sharp corners and it handled just fine. Just make sure your tires are good and warmed up before trying any hard cornering because the stock tires SUCK inmho.

Congratulations, and welcome to the addiction!! ;D It'll be just fine where it's at. Changing the preload doesn't actually make the springs stiffer or softer, it just changes ride height and sag. You're light enough that the stock springs are close to being the right rate. Down the road you'll want to change the fork oil to a bit thicker weight, but you don't need to worry about that for a while yet. Just go ride and have fun. :)

So I can actually use the suspension settings to adjust ride height? Sweet - not only am i light, but i'm short too... ::) i can stand on the balls of my feet with the stock settings, would you suggest tuning the suspensions down a bit to lower it?
Yep, set both the front and rear preload to their minimums. That will help a little. Lots of people have some of the foam shaved off the top of the stock seat, done right that can make big difference.
