Running Rich

Hey all

Have a 05 SV650S which I recently bought, unfortunately it's not running great. It doesn't idle smoothly and sometimes dies when you blip it. To start the bike you have to give it a touch of throttle too.
The problems seem to ease off when it's warmer though.
Gave it a service today and found the plugs very sooty suggesting it's running rich. It has an aftermarket exhaust but no remapping. Could this because causing the overfuelling? It often backfires too and I can smell the unburnt fuel out the back.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Dave

The 05 comes with a good map from the factory and can handle an exhaust without any mapping. You have some issues, but the oem mapping isn't one of them, unless your Ecu is f'ed up.

Some occasional backfiring is normal with aftermarket exhausts. It is the result of the PAIR system injecting fresh air into the exhaust. You can block it.

You need to go through all the tune-up adjustments: valve adjustment, TB synch, TPS in that order. Look for vacuum leaks (make sure both TB's are seated and clamped tightly) as the manifold pressure sensor controls the mixture at cruise and any leaks will reduce the signal to it leading it to think the engine is under a heavy load and it'll dump the fuel.

Also you might check the fuel volume to be sure the pump and filter are OK. I know it sounds counter-intuitive that you might have low fuel pressure...but the injectors need a certain amount to spray a proper mist that is easily burned. Low pressure will still run but the injectors shoot out more of a stream of gas that is hard to light and won't burn completely leading you to believe it's running rich.

For the record, most SV's (and other bikes of similar vintage) DO run richer than they could due to emission regs. Controlling NOx calls for a rich mixture that keeps the combustion temperatures down. Better economy and a cleaner burn can be had by remapping the ECU leaner in many cases. Go over all the tune items and I'll bet you find something wrong.:)
