Go north!

Though they aren't "newbie" roads you are just a few miles south of some of the best riding around. Hwy 2, hwy 39, big tujunga canyon road, and glendora mountain road are all a blast. Just take it easy and do the speed limit and you will be fine, and have a lot of fun.

+1 get the basics and survival skills down and work up from there.

Try on gear to get sizes at local shops and compare prices online like

http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com

http://www.newenough.com/

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/

to name a few. Get some good bargains in the closeout areas of these sites but usually limited sizes, hence finding your sizes at local shops first.

Also try SVR 'Riding Gear For Sale' section here on SVR. Also dont forget your local dealer whom may have good sale deals on certain items.

EDIT: btw, welcome to SVR

I would recommend staying on back roads with light traffic so you can build up confidence and experience with your bike.

ACH (HWY 2)
Azusa (HWY 39)

those are the 2 I frequent.

i heard from a Harley guy once that canyon roads are 2.5 times as fun without proper gear than it is with....but I don't listen to him. You shouldn't either.
