removing bolt in gear shift lever

Just got my 2007 SV 650 yesterday. Dropped it today. Long story. The knob on the gear shift lever broke off. Bought a new one but I can't get my old one off. It's connected by a bolt and what looks like a C ring with two holes in it at the front end. I have no idea how to separate it from the foot rest unit. Please help!

Thanks for responding Slak. I'll post a pic when I get home. But for now, the hole above #31 is where the bolt goes through with a washer and another C shaped washer (don't know what it's called) pinning it on the outside. I can't remove either.

On the other side, behind the hole (behind the actual lever) is a nut. Behind the nut is the foot rest plate. The bolt goes through all three (the lever, the nut, the foot rest plate) and appears to be screwed through the foot rest plate. I don't know whether to unscrew it out somehow, or pull it out or what.

I was told this was easy but I'm no mechanic and I've racked my brain yesterday trying to figure it out. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

unscrew the bolt that goes thru the rearset plate and into the foot peg (#6 that connects to #5). don't mess with anything else, and it will come apart and allow you to replace your shift lever.

it might be hard to get to (it's an allen and in close quarters), so you can remove the 2 bolts that hold the rearset plate on the bike, put it in a vise and then loosen that bolt. you should be removing #6...

Yes, Monarch, it's #38. How does one remove it to remove #33 then? I can't think of a way to unscrew it since #33 has a flat end.
Now remember I don't have a second gen, but as I understand it the shifter pivot #33 on '04-'07 SVs is separate from the peg. I don't see why you need to remove the pivot. If you remove the circleclip #38 (with the snap-ring pliers I mentioned earlier) won't the shifter just slide off?

If I'm wrong hopfully an '04-'07 owner will chime in.

BTW the manual I pointed you to might not help you with this particular problem. The '03 footpeg and shifter assembly is different than the other sencond gens and that manual might be '03 specific. I just don't know.
