I have a radar detector in my truck and I want to wire a hardwire for my bike so I can swap it when Im not driving my truck. Is it completely un heard of to use a regular windshield radar detector on a bike? I know I wont be able to hear the beeping, but at least I can see the red bars on the detector. As for mounting Im still working on that. The radar detector is a passport escort 7500.

Not unheard of at all. As far as i know, none of the moto-specific detectors are particularly good.

I know this defeats the point of just swapping from bike to truck and not buying a new detector, but there are several inexpensive but good car ones that include a headphone jack. I just picked up a whilstler xtr-695 which has a 2.5mm mono jack.

I ride with my ipod, so I guess I would have to pick. That was my next questions, if some of the moto made brands are any good lol.

there are also a couple moto-specific visual helmet alert systems that I think get their signal from the headphone port. I haven't really looked into them.

no this isnt hard to do. have you thought of how you plan on keeping it dry? Also remember you will have no rear protection due to your body blocking it. You could buy a unit with two remote sensors and mount them as needed say one front one back. They generally have a little box you can 3M to your dash and noise wont be important

H.A.R.D. is the visual alert system.
There is also an amplified speaker called "screamer" or something that you can hook up.
You could also use a passive mixer to pipe the two sound sources to your headphones. There are some active mixers that will mute you ipod when the detector goes off.

Radar will not be obscured by the body. Laser will.

^^^^^^^^yeah sorry, you lnow what I meant. you will still sense a radar wave but it wont be as strong.

ironic that I work with radars all day here in Iraq, it will feel weird not having radiation pooring through my body all day every day when I get home.

yes I am serious, I am a C-RAM maintenance NCO, I do work with radars

I have had a V-1 for several years, expensive, but good service from Valentine, upgradable technology as leos as new rader bands and or entrapment techinques. Remote Adaptor is needed for bike applications. I have the audio from mine override all other inputs on my Autocom system

Unfortunately none are waterproof, I've had to send my V-1 in for repairs a couple times,

Valentine, Passport & Bel are all top notch units, the V-1 gets a few more false alarms, but with the forward and rearward sensor, you have directional arrows point to where the signal is coming from

Wow, a lot of great input thanks. I dont usually speed a lot, I just want it as extra potection for when im feeling aggresive. So I dont want to spend too much so Im trying to work with what I have (im paying for my wedding). Its 30 dollars for a hardwire kit for my passport. I dont have a chatterbox or anything hightech. I still pull my helmet over my earbuds lol. It would just be nice to eyeball a detector instead of trying to eyeball 2 miles ahead of me. as for water, I plan on taking it in with me when Im parked or when Im home, so it will only be attached while im riding. I was just wondering whats out there and what other people have. This is only my second year riding so Im just now getting th bug to mod my bike a bit.
