Hi Everyone!

So I was browsing all the TRE threads on the forum for a while and finally decided to take the leap and make myself a smart automatic TRE. I noticed there was a healthy interest in the TRE's nickgreen was building so I decided to get a few of the factory plugs and pick up where he left off. I bought the wire, resistors and transistors needed to build these in quantity so I figured I would offer to build these plug and play smart TRE's for anyone that was interested.

I am building my plug and play aTREs in 2 versions for all models of SV650 from 2003 to 2009:
Version 1: Standard aTRE - $39
Version 2: Switchable aTRE - $56

NOTE: These prices cover the cost of the build components, my labor and shipping to the lower 48 states. Shipping outside the US is actual cost.

To Order Visit: Cost effective TREs for Suzuki SV Motorcycles by StevesTRE on Etsy

Thanks!!
- Steve

And onto the details...

Version 1: Standard aTRE - $39

TRE in Packaging

Version 2: Switchable aTRE - $56

NOTES:
1. Version 2 is the same smart plug and play design as Version 1 but will include a switch to allow you to switch between stock and TRE mode (aka: On and Off) for on-the-fly comparison and eliminating the need to uninstall the aTRE to go back to stock timing. The switch will be on a 12 inch lead allowing you to mount it somewhere within reach while riding.
2. SV1000 units will be the same design as the SV650 pictured but with the appropriate white triangle shaped 3 wire plugs instead of the translucent 4 wire square ones used on the SV650.
3. My TRE can be removed at any time returning your SV to stock condition leaving no alteration to your bike.

So what is an aTRE and what does it do?

It stands for "Automatic Timing Retard Eliminator". It is important to understand that "timing" refers to when the ignition spark occurs, relative to the position of the piston during the combustion cycle of your engine. The optimum place for the spark of ignition to occur is just a before the piston hits top dead center. If the "timing" is set in this manner, there is maximum torque provided by the firing of the piston.

If the ignition is timed too early then the fuel and air are ignited while the piston is still coming UP, so that a lot of energy is wasted battling this upward momentum. This is called advancing the timing.

If the spark occurs too late then the piston is ALREADY moving DOWN, the fuel/air mixture is NOT fully compressed anymore, and less "push" is obtained from the explosion. This is called "retarding the timing". It gives you something less than maximal torque. Proper timing is crucial to maximize the "push" to the piston, which equals more maximum torque.
Suzuki has deliberately programmed the SV computer for less than maximum torque in gears 1, 2 and 3. Presumably, this is done to protect the rider from the full power. What they've done is to "retard" the timing, or make the spark occur TOO LATE, on purpose, so that maximal torque is NOT achieved.

The "ATRE" changes the voltage signal sent to the SV’s computer by the gear position sensor and removes the "retarding", to time the ignition spark to when it will give maximum torque. Thus you have "eliminated the timing retard".

The “automatic” part of the name comes from the fact that this TRE is designed to working automatically while maintaining the neutral voltage for smooth starts and proper neutral timing. It “automatically” turns on the TRE function when you switch into gear. This simple plug and play modification gives you better combustion and power in gears 1, 2, and 3. You'll notice the SV has smoother more responsive performance without the excessive jerking and engine braking in lower gears.
-----------------------------------------------

A Note About TRE Performance

I don't want to mislead anyone, no simple aTRE will give a "dramatic" difference in performance. A $27-$40 electronic part isn't going to produce power like an engine swap or turbo or some $1000 horsepower producing device, it is a subtle change. Knowing this and using it I think the improvement is worth what I am charging but it really blows my mind that "others" are having success selling the same device for $100+ dollars. Please keep in mind that my TRE, and any TRE for that matter is only modifying the voltage going to the ECU to eliminate the timing retard and make the bike think it is always in 5th gear. It only affects the lower RPM range on the first 4 gears. If you feel smoother acceleration and throttle response in lower gears (less jerky feeling down low) and a mild increase in lower end torque then it is doing its job. I would say the bottom line is that my aTRE improves the real world drivability of the SV650 and SV1000 especially in traffic, at slow speed and through the twisties.

Don't get your hopes up on the TRE improving your dyno numbers. From the little I know about dyno testing, it is my understanding that dyno runs are performed in higher 4th and 5th gears and the real numbers come out under full load. The TRE functions on lower gears 1-4 on the lower half of the RPM range. It doesn't have any effect on upper RPM range or "wide open throttle".

So if you do a run in 3rd or 4th gear you may see an improvement in the very low end of the chart but on standard 5th gear runs the TRE will do NOTHING to improve your dyno numbers because my aTRE does not affect 5th and 6th gears at all. I will go on record now to say don't expect to see much if any change in your horsepower numbers on the dyno.
-----------------------------------------------

Neutral Glow Phenomenon

UPDATE: I wanted to make an official announcement to let everyone know that I have made slight modification to my ATRE design. The modification has eliminated the neutral light ghosting phenomenon completely!!!

The neutral light ghosting was purely a cosmetic issue but I feel that being able to eliminate it is an improvement in the design nonetheless. The updated design started shipping in the beginning of August 2009 and is marked by 3 wires coming out of both sides of the unit instead of 3 and 2. Other than the neutral light fix, function and performance of both designs is identical.

Re: Plug and Play Smart (aTRE) for '03-'06 SV650

Okay folks, thanks for the interest and spirited commentary.

An invoice has been sent to all that requested. If everyone pays their invoice the first lot of 5 will be sold. I am ordering more plugs today and will ship the next batch of units out in about a week as soon as the plugs arrive. Please continue send your requests and payments to avoid any delays in shipping.

I have no idea if this will work on an '07-'08 models and make no claims to this fact.

A NOTE ABOUT DESIGN DUPLICATION AND RESELLING:
First off, I have read and I am aware of sv-racing parts allegedly copying and/or selling other people's designs. I don't know if any of this is founded or not but I figure since I am "borrowing" the plans for this TRE, which I have made perfectly apparent in the first post of this thread, then I would be just as guilty as the next guy for building and selling these units based on another persons design.

Now that being said, I would sincerely hope that everyone would play fair here. I know that this is a working design and that I am selling these units for the least amount of money around. I am doing so in an effort to give everyone on the forum a chance to try this mod out at a very reasonable price. I am currently not selling these on ebay or anywhere else and would ask that if you are buying multiple units for friends or race buddies that you pass the deal along for the same price I charged and not try to make any money on my hard work, because I am making practically nothing on these considering the amount of personal time it takes to build these suckers. If you want to make money on TREs please build your own. I will be marking my units before shipment and you can be sure that if my units show up on ebay I will start selling mine there as well for less out of spite.

Thanks!!! - Steve

Re: Plug and Play Smart (aTRE) for '03-'06 SV650

I will likely get in on the next batch. So no annoying side affects from installing this on 03-06 correct?
May give a very faint neutral light in some gears. I haven't seen this yet but some claim it is visible at night it is said this varies from bike to bike.

Re: Plug and Play Smart (aTRE) for '03-'06 SV650

What exactly is this about? aTRE?
jay313 said it pretty good:
Spacecoast: ATRE is Automatic Timing Retard Eliminator (or close to that). Someone more knowledgeable correct me if I get this wrong, but it is my understanding that bikes have timing retard built into some (if not all) gears in order to pass Federal emissions regulations. The ATRE gets rid of this, which results in better throttle response and performance.

I looked at the gear indicator/aTRE sold by the speedohealer folks, but balked at the $140 price. Interested to hear whether there is a noticeable affect on performance. I've seen one review that claimed the difference was easily felt on I-4's, but not so much on a V-Strom, which (as we know) is the same engine as the SV. So, curious to hear from someone with ATRE whether it actually works on the SV or not.

But if you want more info search the forum for "TRE" or check out the thread that got me started http://forum.svrider.com/showthread.php?t=82497

Re: Plug and Play Smart (aTRE) for '03-'06 SV650

+1 for the next batch, and a ghetto subscribe
Sweet. I'll be waiting for the next batch. :)
I am requesting that anyone and everyone that wants me to build them a TRE send me a PM with your email address and the number of units you want so that I can send you a PayPal invoice for payment.

I am taking note of the forum IDs of those people that say they want to be considered for the next batch but you aren't in line until you PM me your email address and I send you a PayPal invoice and you pay for your TRE. To make this a fair and efficient process and to avoid getting to far in over my head on this venture I am ordering the most expensive component of this build, the factory plug sets, in lots of 5 plugs and those who have already paid or pre-pay for the next batch will get first delivery.

I am trying to reduce delays as much as possible by building the TRE units beforehand while I wait for the plugs to arrive so as soon as the next batch of plug sets come in I can crimp them up and ship the units out to paid buyers. The next batch of 5 plugs is set to arrive in few days.

Thanks!

Got it yesterday and it is installed works great, at night the N light is hardly visible.
Awesome! Thanks for the report. Also please let us know, as SV650Naked inquired, if you did in fact install it on an 2008 model so I can expand the application offering.

Re: Plug and Play Smart (aTRE) for '03-'06 SV650

2/27/2008 UPDATE 2: SWITCHABLE Plug and Play aTRE Option now available!

I have decided to offer a second SWITCHABLE version of my aTRE. This version will still be the same smart plug and play design but will include a switch to allow you to switch between stock and TRE mode for on-the-fly comparison and eliminating the need to uninstall the aTRE to go back to stock timing. The switch will be on a 12 inch lead allowing you to mount it somewhere within reach.

The cost of my SWITCHABLE aTRE will be $35. I am also offering an $8 switch upgrade to all 2nd and 3rd batch orders that have been paid but not yet shipped.

All future PM requests for TREs should still include your email and quantity desired but also include which model you want. "SWITCH aTRE" or "STANDARD aTRE" so I invoice you for the correct amount.

I just wanted to post a short note to let everyone know that I haven't forgotten about you, I have all the TREs built for everyone that has already paid but I am still waiting on the darn plugs and switches to arrive. I am really still hoping to get them all out by the end of the week with any luck, sorry for the delay. I have ordered more plugs to try to get a little ahead of demand so that future orders will go out quicker. I appreciate the support, please hang in there.

Thanks!

Re: Plug and Play Smart (aTRE) for '03-'06 SV650

Hi Everyone,

I am still here! I know a lot of you are still waiting on your aTREs. Well I got 5 plugs today and will be shipping out the 2nd batch order units first thing Monday to the following members.

1. of_the_troops
2. MBIKEN
3. learnin4life
4. auraaura50
5. hank4444

I placed the plug order to fulfill the rest of the orders on February 25th and I thought I was going to receive all the plugs by this weekend but it didn't happen. Please hang in there all the units are ready to go, I just need to add the plugs when they arrive so I will be able to ship all paid orders out the day after the plugs come in. I contacted the seller last week and he assured me they shipped on the 25th, I am crossing my fingers that the will arrive this week.

In the meantime...

I did some testing regarding the neutral light ghosting. I have actually been corresponding with a very helpful forum member who happens to be an electrical engineer (thanks Gregg) about how to eliminate the ghosting. I tried adding another resistor to the design but it didn't remedy this cosmetic issue. I was told the ghosting phenomenon is a common problem in LED drivers, it is caused by the sneak current path through the 47K resistor and the transistor's Base/Emitter junction. The ghosting is purely cosmetic and very minor but I decided to take a few pictures for those who are curious to see what it looks like and how it compares the neutral light intensity when actually in neutral.

The pictures below were taken in a dark garage and you can see how minor the neutral ghosting is even in low light. Also I should say ghosting does NOT get any more intense as RPMs rise above 4k but it is present as shown below in the switchable aTRE in both on and off positions.

1. aTRE installed bike idling in NEUTRAL.

2. aTRE installed bike idiling in GEAR.

3. aTRE installed bike in GEAR REVVED to 4k RPMs.

Re: Plug and Play Smart (aTRE) for '03-'06 SV650

As far as I can see, this is a non-issue with this aTRE.

Steve, thanks for your work on this and the expedient shipping. Thanks!
Thanks for the confirmation on the FI light. So did you get your unit already? If so, WOW that was fast they went out yesterday morning! Gotta love Priority Shipping!

Re: Plug and Play Smart (aTRE) for '03-'06 SV650

just got mine this morning... have to wait til lunch to put it in tho. plus it sucks outside in philly right now, hows it down in the DE shady?
Glad to hear it arrived! Nice and dreary down here but a little warmer than the last couple days. The 70 degree weather last weekend got me all pumped up and ready for riding season and then it dropped back down below freezing. Can't wait for Spring to really come!
