The pictures of the oil filter in the service manual has a bolt running thru the middle. My filter has no bolt running thru it is just screwed onto the engine is that normal for a 01?

yep, that confused me too at first. the filter that comes with the bike (at least on the first gens) is an OEM one without a bolt. you can buy offbrand filters with the bolt, which will make changing the filter a bit easier, or you can buy the same OEM ones and use a belt wrench (~$10-$15 @ HD/Lowes) to get it off. (you might be able to screw it off with your hands, but i couldnt get mine off. reattaching the new filter, just using your hands should get it sufficiently tight.)

or you can just buy an OEM filter and use your hand... over 18k miles on my SV and never used any tool on the filter and never had any leaks ;)
