My issue is it wont stay running all of a sudden.

I've never had the issue before. Have been using the 2001 sv with @25,000mi with no issues as a commuter and for small track days/ sprint on deals gap.

As of late (about a month) the batt doesnt seem like it wants to hold a charge.. maybe the charging system is or is going bad. stator?-someone mentioned.

So i have just been jump starting it with no issue and riding it to work cruising at 60mph most of the way.

One day all of a sudden after just sitting in the garage for a bout a week, even with a powerful jump from my Diesel Ram, it would barely get running on full choke. normally after a few sec on full choke, the RPM's shoot up and i gradually lower the choke before removing the jump cables. Now, as the bike raises in RPMs from 1000 to 2000 it just kills itself like it would had i cranked on the throttle. after about 10 min of repeating this over and over with the same result in the hot/humid NC weather all geared up, i got frustrated and just garaged it and jumped on my ruckus instead.

WTF is up with the SV?! i did a search and only came up with the 'no start threads' and it did make me remember the one time i pulled the tank apart and saw the little tube fuel filter with the petcock.

I removed and cleaned the carbs when i got the bike.. maybe about 8000 miles ago? have not checked plugs- though it sounds normal, two cyl when starting.. and i did not get any rain riding on it in a long time.

You need to determine if the battery is indeed going south or your charging system is at fault first. Eliminate the battery and then you can proceed if the battery or charging system isn't the culprit. Do you have multimeter? Do you have a bike battery charger? A fully charged battery should show 12.5-13VDC at rest. Once running, at 5Krpm the voltage should show 13-15.5VDC. The stator output at 5Krpm should be >70VAC. I will post the Suzuki manual page on testing the stator output and the R/R diodes. The battery must be fully charged to run tests. To determine if the battery is holding a charge under load you can meter the battery voltage while hitting the start button. The voltage shouldn't drop much below 11V.

If the battery is bad or marginal, it won't provide a good enough spark for the motor to idle or run properly.

^ yeah copy.

RMAN thanks for the info and manual! that will help that issue alot. Im deployed right now for another few days and dont have the bike to tinker with.. but i will do that for sure and report back with findings.

BUT- My dying issue is occurring with the bike still hooked up to the jump cables. Wouldn't that be something else as plenty juice is still there?

WELL... i still havnt found my voltmeter.. i prayed and hoped for the easy fix and just replaced my tiny mower batt with a 9bs. So, batt was new and fully charged.. still just cranked.

Didnt notice before.. but my headlights are out yet the blue highbeam indicator stays on no matter position of the switch.

I have some spares laying around.. swapped the voltage regulator.. no difference. Swapped the square black box on the inside of the VR.. no difference. Crap.

Propped the tank up and sprayed started fluid.. CRanKed right up!!! And stayed running till it ran out of started spray. Hrmmm not getting fuel??!! How to test the fuel pump? I wonder if things got fried from the diesel 14v battery. :-/ ive been using the rig to jump anything for so long.. never thought it would be an issue.

Any other ideas?

update, just returned from a 6mo deployment.. before i left and stored the bike ( i thought i had posted) i took the carbs out and opened them up..
to find JELL-O! or caviar.. just NASTY gelatinous gunk. i cleaned it all out, removed needles jets sprayed everything down with carb cleaner.

put it all back together and.. it ran a -little- better, but still wouldnt off choke. ARRRGH!

a shop i just went to said there is still possibly varnish etc in all the tubing/lines. so i've left it to them to acid dip and get everything else out. hope that does it.
Also have a new Alien Li batt on the way.

thanks Terriakee

i gave it to the shop and they completely cleaned the carb/fuel system and it cranks and runs. New Li batt died out because the Stator is now culprit!

new ricks stator is on the way. ugh.
