Is it normal to hear a solid "thunk" sound when shifting from N to 1st gear on a 2007 SV650N? I bought this bike about a year ago and it has always been there - even after an oil change. It isn't a grind, and the clutch seems to be adjusted well enough.

yes, they all make a thunk when the gear dogs engage, but there's no damage due to low rpms, but you don't want to rev it up and then slam it into gear, as this will harm the transmission.

Yep, it happens. Not all the time for me- usually depends on where things have come to a halt in the transmission for me or how much I load the shifter when I pull in the clutch. It's done it for 9 yrs that I have owned my SV.

Just changed the oil. Went with Shell Rotella T6 5w40 synthetic. Must less thunk... more of a polite click now.

Good stuff.

Can't you see the bike smiling?
