Need all the assistance I can get - in Australia pls

Hi all, Living in Perth, WA, Australia. My SV650 purchased new Dec 2001 - initially for Motorcycle Rider training (was a licensed instructor at the time). The old girl has seen a lot of action and now has in excess of 117,000 kms original and on the clock. As a result of the training regime has a few dents and scrapes but still soldiering on. Nothing is wrong - seriously - but would like to keep the machine on a par with some of the equivalent Euro and Jap machines while showing a bit of individuality.
Suspension - parts in this country are extortionate in comparison to the US. However have been doing some research regarding Racetech and *********** gear. Rear shock is way past use by date so any ideas in this area would appreciated.
Engine - Have seen 4 degree advance keys for igniter trigger in UK. Plus a snappier throttle with a bit more oomph across the board would be on the cards. Carb mods or upgrades, exhaust, slip on or full systems - any suggestions would be gratefully received and sites or directions to relevant websites would be excellent. I think the younger generations use a term - 'sick' - that would substitute for excellent, eh.
Braking - like the look of some of the gear I've seen fitted to SV's by their proud owners. USD forks look great (Hyosung started something there eh), complete with beaut brakes are beyond the scope at this time.
Bodywork - would like to update the look - cosmetic surgery springs to mind - but would prefer nothing too difficult as costs tend to escalate dramatically if one gets carried away. Off the shelf would be ideal.
Guys/girls - a photo of your machines and a list of your mods/costs would go a long way to setting my mind on a course to follow. Many brains make light work. Wal

used gsxr rear shock(new as possible) 100usd(or less)

new hh brake pads and stainless lines 150usd

yamaha r6 throttle tube 15usd

new fork springs and fork oil 110usd

factory pro ignition advance kit 55usd

factory pro carb kit 250usd

used slip-on 150usd

approximately 830usd

less than a grand and you'd have a nicely refreshed bike.

cosmetic stuff?
if you have an svs maybe go naked. or put plastics on your naked!

ebay has a lot of international shippers, so i would start there for sure.

with that many miles i can only assume you've been doing regular maintenance stuff.
if not, i could make the list a little longer ;)
clutch cable, rear brake line and fluid, throttle cables, carb service(clean and rebuild), chain and sprockets, tires, spark plugs, valve inspection/adjustment, carb sync, etc.

BTW, most of us on svdownunder.com get our stuff from the US, using USPS for shipping. Ends up being about half compared with wreckers in Oz, even incl P&H. (I'd add emulators to the front suspension list.) There's an excellent thread on replacing your damper rod suspension with Honda cbr600 F3 or F2 internals, even better.

Not sure if you've seen the site http://www.svdownunder.com/index.php but it is not too bad... it'll give you a better idea for local stuff..

But general SV this site probably covers the most... it's better than the sv650.org site too for the most part unless you're in Europe and have a 1st gen

That is what I would suggest, that and the SVotM threads as well. Welcome and good luck!
To all of you who responded - svsuperninja, eddiemon, ixlr8 (u an Aussie?), zokambaa and variable9 - many thanks.
Despite the high kms, the bike has received regular services all it's life. No problems there.
Have nearly completed fitting an 04/05 ZX10R rear shock (purchased locally in Perth).
Unit has done approx 5000 kms, so plenty of life yet.
Have Race Tech springs and Gold Valve emulators coming - springs from Sydney and emulators from USA.
Will progress on other threads as work and time permits.
I have a cousin that lives in Perth. Just saw her last Christmas.
I was in perth in the early 80's with my family... don't remember a lot... I think we spent more time at rotness island than perth... that was kind of a cool place...

I did spend most of 1998 and part of 1999 driving from Sydney to Cairns, then back down to Melbourne and Adelaide and back to Sydney before going to NZ for a weekend... and then to Fiji for a month...

I had intended to buy a bike while I was there... but.. when I was in Sydney.. motorcycles cost more than a moderately decent crappy old car... and I had luggage so I went that way...

Some day I'll be back... hopefully to do it by bike next time...

I was hoping to start in Melbourne next time and ride up the center to Coober Pedy and Ularu.. then up to Darwin... perhaps it isn't the smartest idea to ride a bike through the desert... but it would be a hell of a trip...

Zokambaa - I think you mean Rottnest Island.
If you're going on sealed roads, a KLR or DR or KTM adventure bike would be the go.
Then if you want to go exploring - not too many worries with off-road capability.
Just don't expect them to behave like an enduro bike.
Still recovering from a get off with my Husqvarna TE450.
That needs fixing too - broke the rear subframe.
Any ideas about where to get one out of the States please.
OOps - forgot!
In case any of you decide to come to the most isolated capital in the world, let me know please.
May be able to help with some very short term accommodation, etc.

A VStrom would be another good option for an Aussie touring bike.... as long as you get decent tires...
You'd probably have a better chance finding one of them since they are Japanese...

As far as your bike... getting parts should be fun.. with the sucking dollar conversion rate ebay will kind of hurt for parts... especially considering shipping to Oz...

Yeah Rottnest... I didn't have to worry about it much when I was a kid... the Quokkas were cool as well as riding a bike around the island and staying in the old prison.... as well as the snorkling trips we did to some other island a short distance away... I'd imagine things have changed a hell of a lot since the early 80's :p

I'd love to take a Vstrom 1000 across Australia... the roads can be prety shi++y though... even that haul across the plains from Melbourn to Adelaide really sucked.... and the road material is like razors... good tires are not a thing to hold back on if you are riding in Oz... But... it would be quite the experience to bike actoss Australia..

I was doing a long haul trip from Sydney to Melbourne and on to Adelaide as quickly as I could... and they were working on the interstate between Sydney and Melbourne... so I had to take crappy back roads... the scenery was nice.. but after 8 hours of driving a short shoulder with loose pavement and I was in the ditch... then the tow truck moron flipped the car on it's roof as he tried to pull it out of the ditch...

a few dents and bad wheel alignment later as well as a popped tire I was ready to go again... but I was stuck in some hell hole for a couple days it was only about about 4-6 hours south of sydney in the farmland area... 8 hours on the back roads... they got me back on the road with a new tire... but a wheel alignment was going to take another 2 days (weekend) so I went on... not the best idea... the bad wheel alignment burned through the other tire on the ride to Adelaide... so I got it fixed.... it was fun punching out the dents in the roof and hozing out the car after it had been filled with swampy water from the ditch at the side of the road...

but... I sold the car later to some french guy for only a couple hundred less than I bought it for 5 months earlier... hahahah... ah well... it ran well enough...
