My motorcycle fell apart, AND doesn’t work now

Hey SVRider, I’ve never posted on a motorcycle forum so I’ll try and be as helpful with info as I can!

I have a 2000 SV650s that just hit 40k.

So essentially, I was riding to work, I gas it to catch up to a bike I saw riding on the highway. And then my clutch started slipping, I pull over after losing power.

I realize the read bearing joint of the shift arm broke for the shifter, and I hold it on with my foot, shift into 1st, and keep going to work to be safe and get towed, but I can feel the shifter jiggling and the bike is backfiring now.

I then pull over after I totally lose power for the second time, now it only runs in neutral.

Since, I have replaced the shifter and clutch pack to no avail. And changed oil, with NO shavings or metallic items present in the oil.

I saw another user said him revving for burnouts torqued his clutch nut and it was on too tight? I may check that. If I remember, while changing the pack >in neutral< my discs still didn’t rotate.

There were no grooves or wear or damage in the clutch. And the pushrods have been replaced recently. Lots of care for this clutch, bike still won’t even make a clicking sound or anything in any gear but neutral now.

I welcome your wisdom!

Thanks, and I’m working so I’ll do my best to reply.

A few questions that might help...

Is the condition that the bike will start and run in neutral, but not when it is in any other gear?

If you try to bump start it in first, does the engine turn over?

Does the clutch release, can you push the bike easily in first gear with the clutch lever pulled in?

sounds like the kickstand switch if thats the case...

Interesting suggestions, thanks. I’ll answer in order.

1) Yes that’s correct. if it’s in first, now it won’t even turn the starter motor.

2) I can try to bump start it, but the lights don’t even dim and when I hook it up to my shop charger it doesn’t show a change in voltage if I’m in ANY gear and try to start it (besides neutral).

3) I mean, yeah I believe so? If I pull the clutch in it rolls in 1st. I’ll recheck everything when I get home to be sure but yeah, it rolls in 1st.
Update: Couldn't bump start, still no sound. Can confirm rolls in 1st.
your sidestand switch is turning it off. bypass the sidestand switch
