Not exactly the way I intended to introduce myself to the forum, but what the heck -- things happen! I bought a used 2006 SV650 a couple of months ago and have been enjoying scouring the forum for information (thanks!) and doing a few mods. We got some nice weather up here in the Pacific NW, so I took her out for a ride today and on my way home, my shifter fell off. I managed to ride home, but am still kind of shaking my head about that one. Anyway, I bought an SV because I wanted a "standard" bike with a little bit of attitude at a reasonable price. My two favorite bikes from the past for pure fun were my CB7000SC Nighthawk and Bandit 600, and the SV seemed like the closest option in a modern bike.

Assuming I can get the links to work, there should be a couple of pictures of my SV below -- one right after bringing her home and one I took today. Mods (so far) include a rear seat cowl, sonic springs, mirrors from an Aprilia Shiver (thanks to lmychajluk), sargent seat and silverstar ultra headlight bulb. I also removed those horrid stickers from the frame and tank. Thanks to everyone on the site for their enthusiasm and posting up some great information!

There is a nice post somewhere on making sure the snap ring is properly installed. If it isn't, this is likely to happen as it's the only thing holding the shifter on. Make sure the bevel on the snap ring faces in towards the engine, the flat side out.

Now that's funny! I took the snap ring off today and applied a massive amount of loctite to the the threads and cranked the bolt back in good and tight, but didn't pay attention to which way the snap ring went back on becuase I thought they were the same on both sides -- guess I will go have a second look. Thanks for the tip!
