I'm thinking about buying the following bike and wanted some feedback from the forum.  I'm not sure if the seller reads this forum, but he is a co-worker and a nice guy so please be gentle with any negative feedback.   I had a friend (10+ years riding experience) do the test ride and he said there were no mechanical problems that he could tell.  The cosmetic condition was very very good.  As the ad says, it was dropped, but there are only 2 areas of damage.  4"x2" scratch (not a crack) on the fairings and scratch on mirror.  It is obvious it was dropped not crashed. My friend is hung up about the cosmetic damages, and I'm not too worried about them. Maybe I should be.

If you feel the price is too high, let me know what you think the right price is.
Thanks!

Sounds a little high - I just took a quick look at NADA and low retail (bike runs well but needs some work - cosmetics, etc) for a 2001 SVS is about $2600 and average retail about $3400. You could also check KBB and NADA for your Zip code (I didn't know yours).

However, it's worth a little extra to buy from someone you trust, but it sounds high to me.

Going by what the available used inventory is, the bike seems well price.  Everything else is either higher miles or more money.  Don't get me wrong, I'm glad for the opposing point of view, I'm just having a hard time finding the bikes at the price people think I should spend.  Make sense?  Maybe I'll offer him $3750 or something around there.

A quick look on eBay (which I'm not 100% comfortable buying from) has similar priced/condition or some with big dents/damage bikes for $3000-$3500 with shipping going to cost $500-$1000 and a 14-21 day waiting period.  Also, is there any reason why Seattle should be a higher priced market than others?

Thanks for the feedback and keep it comin'.

I bought an 01 SV with 1800 miles from this board over the weeken for $3300. I sold an 00 SV 2 years ago with 22000 miles for $3500. I think I made a good buy. I love being back on the SV.

I've been using CycleTrader online. Not sure if there is a difference between what's available online vs offline. I'm mostly interested in the S version, but a non-S version with fairings can look pretty sporty too. I don't really want a pure-naked bike.

To give you an idea of what I'm finding (Craigslist, CycleTrader, SoundRider)
Here's a sample what the used market looks like in my area:

Same price, with custom paintjob (so who knows what happened), sparse on the details:

Who knows what the details are on this one: Cost $3500
http://adcache.cycletrader.com/5/2/6/80254426.htm

3000 more miles, 1 year newer, Great Cond (not excellent so what's wrong) includes helmet/jacket, but I would never used a used helmet. Cost is $4600

Here's the one from Northbend. Some mods, a 2 year old picture, not a lot of specifics for $4500
http://adcache.cycletrader.com/5/2/0/80254420.htm

2000 non-S with 10,000 miles for $3500
http://seattle.craigslist.org/mcy/88382214.html

2003 non-S with 6400 miles for $4400

2002 non-S with 4300 miles for $4000
http://seattle.craigslist.org/mcy/87704674.html

2003 with 3000 miles, been laid down (qoute "but not too bad") for $4800 and 2+ hours away.

too high IMHO... I got my 01 SVS for $3500 with only 3200 miles on it completely stock with a 2mm chip on the tank only from a key and never down. Came with 2 Fulmer helmets too. It was from a buddy though that sold it to me and did say he almost sold it for $4000 to someone. I would offer no more than $3500 for that one due to cosmetic damages myself.

Here is my take on it.

I bought and '01 Blue SVS for 3750. The bike was in perfect condition. Not one scratch or dent. Miles were around 7500. 3750 is really kinda high, but I was willing to pay more due to trusting the guy. The buy seemed to come from a good home and was well taken care of.

If this is a friend, he is raping you at 4200. The bike is worth about 3500 IMHO. Offer him 3700 and tell him that is all you are willing to give due to damages and what not. 3700 is a nice price for both of you. You know you are getting a fine bike and he is not getting raped in price for it. The plastics don't really look too bad. Plus it seems like you do not have much riding time (going off having friend ride for you) so busted plastics would be a nice starter anyways. If you crash, not such a big deal.

most of all, if you think you like this bike and are willing to pay the extra money, that is your prerogative!

I just talked to the guy and he has 2 offers (1 at $4000 and 1 at asking price), so it looks like someone's willing to pay that much. Thanks for the feedback. On to the next bike :)

probably best for both of you... I am sure you can find another that may be a little better deal and he got what he wanted.... good luck on the hunt
