Very recently I noticed a soft knock
its at a certain point in the compression of the forks
I know exactly where it is and can feel it when I hit bumps
but sitting on the bike you can push it down and get it every time

any ideas?

It's damping rod noise. Maybe it's time for fluid and spring change.
