Hey I was cleaning my bike(07 650 naked) and noticed that i was missing a screw to hold on this little plastic flap thing thats located above the radiator. There are 2 screws that should be there, but one must of vibrated out. I'm gonna try to get one at a bike shop. But i was just wondering what this thing is and what its for. Thanks???

that's what it sounds like. Isn't it just a splash guard to keep water and particulates out of the open triple tree neck? I would think it isn't necessary....but I would take it off.

That's the blinker fluid drain plug. Your probably out of blinker fluid now.

Sorry couldn't help it.

It's listed as the 'upper fender' in the parts fiche. Necessary? Not in the strict sense of the word. My track bike didn't have one. But I suppose its there to catch mud/water flung up from the wheel from going up any further. Above it you have the lower bearings for the triple. Further up are the instrument cluster and headlight. So it servse some purpose....to keep water/mud off those areas.

It's like takind something apart and putting it back together with all the parts but there is that one f%$#@G screw sitting there looking up at you saying "you are a loser, you think you can fix stuff but NNAAHH!"Or why is there a sock missing when you know you put it in to start .I'm baffled I have no answer.

yeah.. i just inspected further and it is only one screw. The other part is a little pole that fits loosely into a hole. It is kinda crooked looking like the pole part dosnt fit properly into the hole, or like the plastics bent. I never noticed it before but it definetly looks weird. Also theres some rust building up in the same area, it's only 1.5 years old, is that normal, any tips for cleaning it?

Front stands use a pin that goes into the large hole the flap covers. The one screw scenario allows you to rotate the flap out of the way when you use the front stand.

I kept forgetting to put it back when I took her off the stands. So I just removed the flap.

For surface rust I use WD-40 and fine steel wool. You can also use a brass "toothbrush" to get hard to reach areas.
