OK folks, the numbers are in and I'm back to tell you about it:
So, after some back and forth with the insurance people, I got a payout of about $3500. ~$1600 for the bike, and ~$1700 for the accessories. --So let that be a lesson to us all: SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS.
Talking to the claims rep, it was very obvious that these are people who are just there to implement company policy and really have no teeth. Yes, a small claims case might be the way to go for some, but I just don't have time to die on that hill. I tried to remain as neutral and factual as possible in our communications--I had no reason to get pushy, as the facts were right out there for them to see. But my insurance policy (and this is probably the case for any comprehensive policy as well) states that the payout for a total loss would be:
"its actual cash value — which is the market value of your vehicle based upon several factors, such as its pre-loss condition, age, options, mileage, etc. — minus any applicable deductible. We work with a third-party to help determine the actual cash value."
So, no, they were not going to pay to replace it, just the cash value--which, as I complained about earlier is nowhere near the obvious actual value of my beloved steed, which is obviously $1M + change. I mean c'mon, it had a very tasteful rip on the passenger seat--that's some custom work worth a couple grand, at least!
In the end, I could tell the insurance adjuster was kind of shrugging her shoulders at the fact that she couldn't budge on the company policy, but she was also very adamant about the fact that I list every single add-on that might have been stolen with the bike. Like the helmet. Cuz sure, don't we all keep our helmets locked up with our bikes? But in the end, I realized that all the nickels and dimes really added up. I mean, getting back those $1700 for all the aftermarket stuff was helpful. A master cylinder here, a brake line there, cover, disc lock, etc. Keep your receipts, boys.
Anyway, that's my story. Hopefully it helps you in the future. As for my next ride...I already picked up a DRZ. I really can't do another SV right now. Just need a palette cleanser, which--holy shit--a DRZ is totally a palette cleanser when you've been riding street bikes for years and years. (Also, a DRZ is a total thief magnet, why did I do this to myself SMDH.)
So I guess I'll be graciously tipping my hat to y'all over here as I bow out of the room and move over to the Thumpertalk forum. It's been a pleasure. I have gathered so much helpful info over here from you, and I'm sure I'll be back. Maybe when Suzi releases a Gen 4 with like hydrogen power or something.
Ride safe, y'all.
