I am going to put on my heated grips (the under grip element kind) this weekend. Is there any tips before I start? Where did you wount your swith? And did you go straight off the battery?

There have been a few good write-ups here you might be able to find (search)
major points:
-have compressed air handy to remove old grips OR cut off the old ones and buy new ($10)
-use a ~5a fuse in the power line.
-tap into the front marker light for power
-Where to mount the switch depends on the switch. Mine was a black rocker, just drilled a hole in the inner "S" fairing somewhere. looks OEM
-Don't use the taps the kit provides; solder and heatshrink all connections
-use "liquid" elctrical tape under the clutch side grip to better insulate so heat doesnt' just go into the bar.
-use JB weld to hold the grips onto the heaters
-your throttle grip may have ribs on it that will need to be sanded or cut off with a utility knife.

which kit did you get? symtec is best IMO

I have gen2 "S" so am not certain where would be best for you to put the switch. Just make sure it is accessible with your LEFT hand!
I'm not sure how permanent the JB weld would be. I suspect to replace the grips, you could cut off the old ones even with the JB weld but haven't needed to yet.
Some people will tell you that you don't need to glue the grips at all (or to use hairspray) but, as someone that has had grips come loose hours form home, at night, in torrential rain, I say glue them on well and replace the heaters every couple years when you replace the grips, if necessary.

My favorite topic! I love my heated grips and I love the canyonchasers writeups:

I have pics of my dist. block install here:

here are a bunch of threads that you might find some good info in:

I got some grip glue @ a Harley dealer of all places, only a couple of bucks... I also recommend insulating the left bar prior to installing the heater, my right side is way warmer than the left and it bugs me. The place I got my heaters from had an insulation tube (heat-shrink tubing I think) but the sales guy said I didn't need it (GRRR).

HTH and good luck, they're awesome,

two more things:
-When you stick the heaters on (after the liquid tape on the left has dried) make sure the wires are sticking out in a reasonable direction throughout the throttle travel.
-Wrap twine over the heaters to clamp them to the bars for 15' or so to let the pressure-sensitive glue adhere before removing the twine and gluing the grips on.
-Some epoxies _really_ don' work well with the grip rubber. Use JBweld for sure.

I have the Symtec's and installed them pretty much just like aschendel and they work great. That really is a good way of installing them. I wrapped my clutch side bar with regular electrical tape and I think it helps. I used regular grip glue also and have not had any problems.
