Sure you can test it yourself, but it may twist out of your hands. Connect the negative end of the battery to the metal case. Then touch the little screw with the nut on it with the positve lead. Touching it for about a 1/2 a second should be enough to see if the motor works. It shouldn't hurt it if left on but it could twist out of your hand as the initial power on has a kick to it.

yes,you can use your car battery.if it does not turn motor over than you can take it off and test as gravity said.there are only 2 bolts holding starter on.

yea, my bother-in-law took it to autozone about a month ago and he said they tested it and it was good. But i dont know if he even went cuz he was just trying to get out of the house from fighting with my sister. So i want to see for myself that it is good before i move on to other things.

Iv been busy with work and just finished fixing my car, now i can give the proper attention to my sv so i can ride again. I was at a stoplight and the bike died on me a while back. Since then it hasnt started and now my battery is prolly dead. It reads 11.xx volts with the ignition off, but when i turn the bike on the horn doesnt even work. thats y i asked if i could use my car battery as i just bought a new one. I know a bad r/r would cause the battery not to charge correctly when the bike is on, but would it cause the bike not to start? As i said before my bother-in-law said my starter was ok, so i bought a new battery and it still didnt start, just whined. Isnt there supposed to be some gasket that goes on with the started, cuz when he gave it back to me it didnt have one, and logic tells me there should be something of that nature there?

Thanks

just cause starter motor spins doesn't mean it's good, it needs to spin freely enuf to start the engine, if bearings or brushes are on their way out, it might spin, but with not enuf power to start the engine
