I just got a pair of CL-1000 saddle bags from Nelson Rigg and before I throw them on I was wondering how people prevent their bags from scratching the paint. I was thinking of putting a piece of cut yoga mat over the rear end and the laying the bags on that, but that might not suffice. I know older bikes had metal bars bolted to the tail to keep the bags away from the sides, but I haven't seen those for an SV

By the way I have a 1st gen if that makes a difference.

my saddlebags came with neoprene pads that prevent them from rubbing on the sides. Try the yoga mat, or any sort of padding. It should work just fine.
Just dont let it get too close to the exhaust.

Or, go on the search for Zen Rails, and/or make something of your own:

Would you mind taking that exact picture again but with just the rail, no plastic? I was debating those a couple months back but not being able to see how they looked kinda scared me considering the price tag.

Have you found any other uses for them, so I can justify the hit on the bank account? ;D

Go to Lowes and get a roll of Tool Chest Drawer Liner. It's rubber padding meant to go in your tool drawers.
Cheap.
Cuts with a knife but holds up nicely inbetween body work and bags - I just cut a hunk and drape it over the back seat and down the sides of the tail, then throw the bags over.

^^^ I was just about to post that info. IIRC, canyonchaser was offering these for sale at a good price, or at least had a connection for getting them at a good price.... but that was a while ago.

I doubt you could go them. A guy on another forum contacted the guy that made them, found out there were a couple sets left, and offered to try to sell them. I contacted the person to say I was interested, but never heard back. Even if my email got lost in the mix, it was so long ago that I seriously doubt there are any left.
