So I went riding in the mountains. (Palomar... second time up there tbe.)
I got low on this one turn and felt scraping right where my shoe was, which freaked me out. I thought it was the foot peg but I guess it was my brake lever.

WTF? Is the stock rear brake lever supposed to be bent like this? I always thought it was just a litttle curved. Apparently, it is not good if it scrapes the ground while riding, so something must not be right.

The position of the brake lever is adjustable. If it is scraping before the pegs, you need to adjust it up (a lot).

Edit: now that there are pics....

That lever is WAY bent from a crash or something. It should run parallel to the bike/ perpendicular to the peg.

That looks EXACTLY like mine after I went down at 50mph when the deer hit me.

I bought a brand new one thinking that one would break when I tried to straighten it. I was lucky, it didn't. Here's what I did. I had an 18" piece of 3/4" galvanized pipe. I but the end of the pipe over the serrated part of the lever and VERY CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY applied even pressure which slowly bent the lever right back to stock shape. I wouldn't have done it without a spare to replace it but now that I know how it's done, I do it again. A new will cost upwards of $65 by the time you get it shipped.

Guys this is a freaking mystery on the par of big foot/ufos/loch ness. LOL

I HAVE NEVER CRASHED nor abused my bike. AND I SWEAR my lever was crooked like that before. SO the question is HOW THE HELL DOES it get like this in the first place??

(I was going 15-20mph .. the guy was going 10-15mph and nothing happened except my radiator got a tiny bit warped.... His MERCEDES got scratched the hell up.)

could be that the pedal got stuck under the car bumper or something and when the bike pulled away from the car it bent... funny that you say you've never crashed and then you mention you were hit by a car. The bike didn't go down when you got hit? awesome balance :)

I didn't consider it to be an accident.;D The guy pretty much just pushed me into the next lane. But yeah, I don't see how it would bend toward the car. Nothing ever got hooked on the guy's car. i am sure the footpeg would hit the car before the leer anyway, it sticks out much more.

Hmm .. thanks for the photo comparison eddiemon. DEFINATELY not normal. LOL.

Slight thread jack.

This is the second thread this week were someone who was lane splitting was hit. I'm just curious who's at fault in this situation? I can't see any chance of a car being cited for anything. Please inlighten me.

Why wouldn't the car be cited? He lives in CA where lanesplitting is legal. If the rider on the bike is following the rules of lane splitting then the driver of the car is at fault.

I am assuming it was the guy's fault. I was at his rear wheel and because "he is in a rush and changing lanes in traffic will save him a carlength" he decides to not look over his shoulder and hit me. It was a monday and sheeple I mean people are still sleepy.

+1 ... I don't lane split more than 30mph (usually) which I believe is the general safe speed.

But yeah back to the MYSTERY of a bent brake lever. It obviously got shaved because of the weird bend it has. But how does something like this happen. Only thing i could think of is sabotage: someone got a long pipe, used leverage, and bent that shizzle. ???

My assumption is that if a car is in a lane and a motorcycle hits it or is hit by it while lane splitting the motorcycle would be at fault because it is trying to take up the same space as the car at the same time.

I'm not saying either of the two SV riders were at fault. I know lane splitting is legal in Cali. I'm just curious, It seems like the potintial for accidents would be really high. I'd like to see stats if anyone has them.

I haven't split lanes on the freeway yet, but I split lanes on the streets when cars are stopped. My bar-end mirror hit a car's rear view mirror once, oops. Some people will move over if they see you coming, A friend had a guy open his car door to block him, what an idiot!
