Having a hard time finding a SV650

First post here, but I have been reading svrider for a long time.

After taking the MSF course last year I decided to get experience on a GS500 before getting on a sv650/one of the 600cc street bikes. Ive been riding that for a while, and decided to upgrade.

I was originally looking for a 07-08 cbr600rr, I found some great deals but due to the crazy insurance quotes Ive been getting I decided to get a sv650 instead. Id prefer a newer model.. 07+ preferably with low miles lol.

Seriously finding SV650s for sale is crazy hard. Ive been searching craigslist all the time.

I found this 09 SV650, silver, 2600 miles, asking $5,500. Is that a decent deal? only problem is its 3.5 hours away 1 way. I tried talking him down to $5,000 he said he has a lien on it and wants to pay that amount off. He was offering to throw in a helmet, jacket, and backpack but I already have riding gear. He said if he doesn't get a better offer in a month he'll contact me and take my offer.

Idk if I should just buy this one for $5,500 or wait for something else to show up...

thoughts?

I'm from Connecticut. Ive been checking the for sale section. And I'm looking for one with full fairings. I'm willing to drive upto 2-3 hours 1 way if I can find a decent deal.

5,500 is not a terrible price at all...but there ARE better better deals to be had. Im not really in the market, but I like to keep an eye on craigslist, just in case a crazy good deal comes along...right now theres an 08 with 2700 mi. and the guy is asking 4700....sooo if you can get it for 5K you'd be doing ok. Or if you just gotta have it - pay the 5500, take all the gear he's offering to throw in and try to sell it off to recoup a few bucks....just my .02

Good deals are to be had, be patient. I picked up a '05 650N with 6.4k miles for 3200$. I would recommend opening yourself up to a few years older, like 04+. The older it is the cheaper, regardless of mileage. All depends on your price range too. On the Suzuki website it says for 5900$ you can get a brand new '08 or '09 SV... Don't know where, but just for perspective.

Good luck!

I picked up a 2006 SV650N with 22K miles and small cosmetic issues for $1200. I wouldn't worry too much about the mileage on these bikes as much as the maintenance. And I would hold out, $5000 is kinda up there to me. For what it's worth, I came from a GS500 too.

I'm CT too, and have been helping a friend find GSX 600 and 750s. I have seen some SVs on the WTNH.com site doing a search for Suzuki within 50 miles of Hartford. New England cycle had a "new" 09 faired, with ABS in stock 2 months ago.

CT here also...and I've purchased two SVs in the past year looking around here. The deals are out there, but you have to be patient. Both of my purchases took daily checking of the following: ebayMotors, Craigslist, cycletrader, and here for 4-6 weeks before I made a purchase (and, yeah, I was very picky).

The Northeast is pretty small/densely packed, so be sure to check neighboring cities. Use SearchTempest (or something similar) to check the craigslist of all surroundings areas (ie, NYC, Boston, Philly, etc). I found one bike on Long Island through eBay and another one in Norwalk, CT through Craigslist. It does take time and willingness to travel. All things considered, we do have it pretty easy though (e.g., think about doing this search in Wyoming).

It's kind of a pain in the @ss, but it's worth it to get the bike you want.

Good luck!

If you're willing to pay $5500 or close to it I'd check a few Suzuki dealers for leftovers, you can probably get an '09 brand new for around that price, if they have any left in stock. I'm sure if they do have any they're willing to negotiate to get them off the floor to make room for new models. As others have said mileage on SV's isn't really a big concern, assuming maintenance has been kept up. My other advice would be to not fret too much about price, I mean sure everyone wants to get a great deal but paying a fair price for the bike that you actually want in good condition is worth it. When you're out enjoying the bike the price you paid will be the last thing on your mind.

My experience with Craigslist is this: If you show up with an amount of cash about 500 short of the asking price, you can make the offer and say, "Here it is, if you're willing to sell it I'll ride it home right now"

This is how I got a great deal on mine. Many sellers see that cash and just can't turn it down. Its too easy to them to just sell it and get the whole process over with.

Also I'd definitely check the for sale section here more than anything. In my experience the prices seem to be more down to earth and the bikes are better kept than some of those you may find on craigslist. Not saying you can't find a great bike on CL, because you definitely can, it's just that craigslist seems to be more hit or miss.

Since you already have a bike, hopefully you arent in a rush. Just keep checking a few places regularly. The right deal will come along. Im not looking for a bike now but I still check craigslist regularly to keep an eye on what is out there. It gives me an idea of the market in my area and if I see an amazing deal, I can jump on it if I want to upgrade. Patience is the key.

Don't just jump on something becasue you want to ride, especially if you are picky. I knew an SV1000 was the bike I wanted, and I looked for about 6 months for the right one. I live on the gulf coast in Florida but theres a guy here selling an '07 sv650 with about 6,000 miles for 3,500. I think that's a great deal if it's in the shape they say it is. The right bike will come along, and you will be ready...it may just take time which is the hardest thing to do.

For $5,500 you could probably get a new one. Certain bikes seem to have a bit of a premium. The 'slower' middleweights like the SV650, 650R, and FZ6 seem to be a touch on the expensive side.

I think I got a good deal on my SV - 11k miles when I bought it, $3,500. $4k would have been my limit. Just keep looking, and don't decide to purchase one because it's the only one. I had a 1982 Yamaha XJ550 with all kinds of trouble just waiting to happen. Believe me, it was very hard waiting out for a good price on an SV650, 650R, or FZ6; but it was worth it. :)

Leins on newer bikes (1-2 years old) are something I would pass on.
Find a bike you can buy for cash that has a clear title that can be transferred over immediately.

You can't be positive that the seller is going to pay off the lein with the money you just gave him
unless you go with him to the bank and watch him hand it over.

The bank won't have the title in the building to hand over to you. It will take a couple more days
for them to get it out of records and loose them all in the transfer ;D

A lien is the sellers responsibilty.
If you have to wait to get it settled, you should be asking for an even bigger discount.

He's asking you for the loan of your money and time (without title or interest) to sort out his business.

Thanks man yeah I thought of that.. I don't want to go through that hassle specially when the guy lives 3 hours away. I'm going to pass on this one and wait for something else to pop up.

I don't mean to bump this with every deal I find, but this ones pretty interesting.

- Went to a dealership today, they kinda know me there
- Found out they just got a left over red 07 SV650.. 0 miles
- They're asking $6,360.00 after fees, taxes, tune up/clean everything up
- Comes with new warranty and available 0% 5 yr financing (idc ill be paying cash)

I don't know what to think of this.. Its my most favorite color, love the 07's. Sucks it only has half fairing but I don't mind that much. The price is up there.... but its brand new! lol Id have the peace of mind of knowing its been broken in right, not beaten, etc. New warranty is nice too. I tried talking them down a couple hundred, but they wouldn't budge. They offered to throw in a helmet/accessories but they do that with every bike and I already have gear.

Thoughts?

Also find this funny. So they're charging for getting the bike in like new condition? Isn't that their duty when selling a new bike? So I guess it's the buyer's fault that the bike has been sitting for 4 years!? I can't stand some dealers.

#26 ·
My thoughts would be to pass. MSRP was around $6500 or so, and it's been sitting for 4 years. That should decrease the value by at least $2k-2.5k, not by just a few hundred. I find it funny that they won't budge, the bike has been a leftover for a few years now and they're firm on their asking price, tell them to enjoy having that bike on their showroom until they're ready to let it go for around $4500.

Keep hunting, there are deals out there like others have said, wait till you get what you want, not so sure an sv is proper first bike , but we all had to start some were, good luck in your search, just for example I just found low milage 07 for really good price, but it took months of searching, and cash in hand, good luck !

I'm in Long island and got my 2k8 naked last month. search wide
I had to drive 3 hours with trailer to delaware

other options were far upstate or near Boston

I found that the NYC area bikes got snatched up very quick. also there are probably fewer bikes now

Not sure where you're located but my buddy has a 2006 SV650S with only 7k miles (all stock) that he may go down to $3k. ;) (located in Show Low,AZ 85901)

Edit: just noticed you're from Connecticut...oh well.

So Ive been using http://www.searchtempest.com/ , searching 250 miles almost every single day. Still havent found anything great.

The guy from the original post, with the 09 silver 2800 miles (pics below) contacted me back, said hed accept $5,000. Said he might be able to meet me halfway too. Kinda thinking about pulling the trigger on this one. Im not crazy about the silver paint :/ really would love that 07 red but its not that big of a deal. Thoughts?
