That the post quality of many of the newer members is really low? By that I don't mean quality of material, I mean quality of Basic English skills. I know we all make typos, spell things incorrectly, or screw up punctuation (I am sure I made a few here). But when I see posts like these:

i have the bar end type and like them alot good vis untel i bud hard cases on.
1 for bar end
yeh regardless of use here in CA, dmv makes u pay a yearly registration fee.
I really have to scratch my head and wonder? ??? These are not exceptions, I see more and more posts like them in which no capitals are used, words are horribly misspelled, etc. I understand many folks post from their phones, but if that's the case what is so hard about not posting like a text and taking your time and at least making the post understandable?

Maybe I am just turning into a grumpy old man, but am I the only one that thinks if you want people to take you seriously, you should put at least a little effort out, regardless of what you are doing?

Nope, you're not the only one.;)

I think a combination of factors lead to the lack of effort. In addition to just plain laziness, there's the *I'm allowing you to interpret the point I'm making* theory....I see it all the time at work. If the person giving the information is vague in some way, then that puts the responsibility on you when it comes down to deciphering what exactly it is they're "trying" to communicate.

It's then win/win for them. If the point they're making is valid and you cracked their communication code, they get to say "I told you so".

If you incorrectly interpret what they <cough> "meant" <cough>, then it's all on you. There's no disputing the point they're attempting to make because no matter what they say, (or type), you're the one that's always misinterpreting it.

It's quite clever actually.:p

Grumpy old men... I'm there with you.

I'm no grammar nazi, but it is irritating. Plus it's just harder to read. I think you might be on to something, with regards to the 'phone texting' generation. It's become acceptable to type like that, even when sitting at a PC.
You guys would love a forum that I used to frequent. TeamNABR.com
Misspellings, lack of puncuation or caplital letters as not tolorated. You could swear all you want but you had better put a period at the end of your sentence.
You were required to use the correct words also for two, to and too, their, there and they're, brake and break, etc...

I think I've found a new home.

Call me herr krautmeister if you want. At heart, I'm a grammar nazi.
I've been a member of the Crotchety Old Men's club for years.

Get in line!

And get off my lawn while you're at it.

(Yes, I agree. I take a few liberties with syntax when typing because I'm lazy and proper structure isn't always needed to be understood. But many of these people do it out of ignorance. It's a shame.)
get off my lawn afore I pepper you with rocksalt ya rugrat
How about we make a sticky about these :)

There, their, they're

There = as in "here" or…

Their = possessive, as in "heir to the throne"

They're = they are. No big savings-just an "a", but I didn't invent it.

You're= You are. Same deal. One letter saved, but it's the way it is.

Your= possessive, as in "ours" and "yours"

Just say "no" to: "I says", "I seen" or "them bands" .

It's "I couldn't care less". As in, " I could not care less". Not "I could care less".

I'm happy to see I am not alone.
I've noticed in students papers at school. I got one on how the person was going to use computers and technology in her chosen profession.... Journalism. I could barely read the paper. There were so many grammatical errors, and she repeatedly used I (even though I specifically said not to use first person in a research paper. The worst part was she didn't even type I, she typed 1.

Ugh.

Stories like this have me convinced that in 200 years, humans will be back to communicating through grunts & gibberish like cavemen.
It's true, the world is gettind dumber... even in one of our local papers, the stories are full or errors.

Is it the world, or America? It seems to me the American education system is being compromised by under funded schools and parents who pass the buck of responsibility to the teachers. Also it seems youth today think the world owes them something. I see it all the time at school with the young students by not showing up for exams or missing paper/work deadlines and get extremely aggravated when the professor's won't let them make it up. They think they should be allowed to do whatever they want, whenever they want.

Brilliantly said, Coop.

My wife is a teacher in public schools... we're intimately familiar with the attitudes people have. Yes, a lot of parents nowadays really think it's the teachers responsibility to raise their children. They don't discipline their kids, and of course these children come to school and cause all sorts of problems. Their parents seem to think school isn't for education... it's a taxpayers daycare.

Interesting.
I remember going to the parent/teacher interviews as a kid. My dad would make me go with him so I could hear first hand what my teacher's comments were about me and my acceleration in class.
One teacher made it a point of advising my father that she was there to teach me the required corriculum of that grade.
They both agreed that the lessons don't stop at school.
More parents need to take on more of a resposibility in their child's education... it should not stop at the school after the last bell.
Ooooo Ooooooo.....Me too.

All aboard the Grammar Train!!

 Kids these days.......Sheesh. Why I remember way back in nineteen diggity doo...........

Sorry, didn't mean to be a bad influence.
I'm with you, though I'm more particular about language than you, I think.

Many younger people don't realize that it makes them sound like an idiot because that's also how their peers type.

There is a difference between informal and formal writing, but some of it is ridiculous.

I think texting is one of the worst influences behind poor grammar.

"r u gon ? btw, pic me up on way"

life has become abbreviated.

Spelling aside, that's a grammatically correct bit of communication.
