Just ran up to Kentucky today to pick up Arimichael's bandit 400 from Suzanne & Zach. Got it home a couple of hours ago and cleaned her up, put on some new grips, bar end mirrors and such and stuck a big bow on it. she'll be back home tomorrow to find her early Valentine's day present in our garage. Here's a pic:

BTW, it's a frozen wasteland in Owensboro, KY. It was close to 50 and sunny here in Nashville and by the time we got 100 miles north of here, it was flippin' Siberia. Suzanne got her power back on already though so at least she's not freezing. Thanks to Arimichael, Suzanne, and Zach for making this surprise gift possible.

Cheers,

TomServo

What are the opinions on black BBQ paint on headers? Waste of time or will it work ok?
It will work and you need to do it before she sees the thing! I used ace hardware brand and put on about 10 coats, it does'nt get completely cured untill you crank it up and run it so be carefull not to scratch them up putting them back on. I'd clean the pipes up with a brillo or scotchbrite pad, 120 grit sandpaper may be a good idea to start with to knock off the outter crust.

I think they'll probably smoke and stink a bit too during the first run after you paint them.

Cool bike though, you've got a lucky GF :)
Yeah forgot to mention that, once you get the pipes back on crank it up and vacate the area! or you can do like I did, let it run while you adjust the chain and get baked out of your skull lol.

True that... you can't give her a bike with ugly pipes... Get any hi-heat BBQ Flat black whatever and get those painted. Eyesore city as it is, but great choice... Your just a few minutes from being really impressive. Heat them up a bit first before painting (just a little) to avoid runs.

Yeah I second the old bolt thing... they like to snap off real easy.. rust and heat can do that over time.... I'd spray them good with some WD-40 first and let it work in for a good 20 mins or so before going at them...

they make a product for bikes for that painting purpose.. but I think any high temp bbq paint should work too... just find one with the higest temp rating.... I don't think BBQs generally get as hot as headders can.. so you might have to redo it to freshen it up in a few years

Copper antisieze those header bolts upon reassembly, and yes copper is worth more than nickel or silver in this case.

If the bolts are stubborn spray them w/pb blaster let it sit over night ,spray again ,if still stubborn heat them w/MAPP gas .Heat is your friend and i have saved many a bolts from shearing by using mapp gas.
