few questions all related, 01 sv650 runs like crap when cold its hard to start it cold bat is fine, takes a little bit to get it going with the choke on when its cold, after its been running for about a half hour it seems to smooth out and be fine but for that half hour there is no bottom end and it sometimes back fires, also im not sure what the bike is supposed to have for pull but it feels really lame... i am coming from and fzr600 so wat kind of power should this bike have?

bests bet is to take it to a performance shop. you could spend all year working that out when a few hours and a couple hundred later you will have the strongest bike on the block. as great as a forum is to get info from other rider, the fact of it is you are still going to need someone to tune it in for you. then you can skip all of the your wrong im right that a forum turns into. trust me, take it in and have a pro take care of it for you. i really hope that helps. i'm sure it will save you a great deal of time in the long run.

Q1 - How many miles on the bike?

Q2 - When did you last change the plugs, air filter?

Q3 - How many months did the bike sit with out being run since 2001?

Q4 - When has the last time you ran some carb cleaner (Seafoam) or removed the carbs to clean them? Rejetting?

Q5 - When was the last time you had the carbs synced? Valve adjustment?

Q6 - Are you running the choke openfor that entire 30mins or less then 1min??

:)

I'm willing to bet you need just a simple tune up. Either do yourself (most how-to's are on here) or get a shop you trust to do it:

Carb Sync
Change Spark Plugs
Change Air filter
RUn some Sea Foam (carb cleaner brand) through the tank
Make sure your battery is fully charged. It may read the proper volts when running...but when it might not hold a charge.
That's running really poor! I have dusted 600rr hondas, first 3 gears. Harleys are no sweat :)
My '01 runs strong within 5 minutes (or less) of starting. Choke is not needed after about 1 minute. This is in 50-60 degree weather. I don't ride when its colder. You probably just need a tune up.

this is your solution.

but I would do those in the exact opposite order ;D
i bought it from the worst place possible they said the went threw the bike blah blah plain and simple they didnt, this bike has no pull wat so ever i dont even stand a remote chance keeping up with any 600. i want the bike to have some pull and i am willing to put some money in to it like pipe and jet kit. the tune up i could probably do the carb synch seems really complex and getting the carbs out looks intimadating, the bike dose get 48mpg tho.... so im not sure if im not used to the vtwin yet or wat but it dose not run 100 i know that for sure

the bike has 12k about to hit 13k, the most ive done for carb cleaning is put some cleaner in the tank
Should run 132 on the speedo!
ive hit that but it was lame getting there, it must be me going from an inline to a vtwin
sounds like plugs to me or the carbs are out of sink. fouled plugs will make it run like crap on startup and seem to run better when heated up sometimes, it probably still isnt running right though just better.

just because it's a 650 doesn't mean it's going to run like a cbgszx-rr 600
and the twin will pull harder than an I4 anyway...especially down low
are you kdding me it should pull harder than an inline down low???????????????
wow i really gotta get this thing looked at i could run faster than this thing
well im going to town on the carbs, i orderd a jet kit i plan on doing the snorkal thing and going threw the carbs. anyone have suggestions on the size jets they run with the modified intake and stock exhuast? i got a dyno jet kit from bike bandit
This is a good walkthrough for rejetting, although I believe that DJ jets use different numbering vs Mikuni jets. Personally, I'd return the jet kit and just buy the individual jets.

now i have another question, is carb sync something i have to do?? i was thinking of desnorkal on the intake along with my jet kit, now if i take the carbs out and apart clean them all out change the jets and set them up the same this should basically be like a carb sync right? or am i wrong?
wrong. Carb sync is different from rejetting, and one does not correct the other
ok what is the easiest way to sync the carbs? i have looked at the carb sync link but it looks really complicated and idk ware to get the gauges
the easiest way is with a purchased carb-sync tool, as you dont have to build anything.
try googling it, there's alot of options out there.
