Ok I just picked up my 03 sv650 naked yesterday. This is my first bike and have never been on a bike or had any experience with them. Well I was sitting on it yesterday and wondering if it is normal to not beable to change gears if the bike is not on. I don't know if this is some sort of safety issue, or if something is wrong.

Rock the bike back and forth to change gear when stopped if you really want to. The internals aren't rotating with the bike off so things most likely aren't matched up at a stop. Roll the bike forward and push down into first, it'll click into place after a foot or two roll.

you could probably shift a few gears without it running, but the tranny only works correctly when moving, hope that answers your question.
