I replaced my fuel cock and the new one is thicker. It is resting on the frame and the tank pad is no longer touching the frame and the tank mount is raised up.

My question is: is it safe to grind down the corner of the cock to make it fit? Or am I asking for trouble?

Should be alright, as long as you don't grind all the way through into a passage causing a leak. But would be much better to just get the right one.

Sounds like you have the wrong petcock. My bike's previous owner installed one that was close, but it crimped the fuel line against the valve cover. I bought an OEM from Partzilla and it corrected the problem.

if you space the front of the fuel tank up at the bolt mounts 15mm or so, it should fit... just move the rubber cushions toward the back accordingly...

... this is actually a common mod to get more air into the airbox (hopefully)....

when I did mine, I had to modify the left side rubber to fit right at the petcock.
